NEW YORK -- When told he was going to start the makeup of Fridays rainout, Daisuke Matsuzaka said he was certain he could go deep into the game, throw maybe 100 pitches, even though hes spent this season in the bullpen. He never mentioned anything about his hitting. The 33-year-old right-hander had success with both Sunday, pitching six solid innings and helping the offence-starved Mets with an RBI single as New York salvaged a doubleheader split with a 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Im pretty confident in my hitting so I just wanted to get a hit and get a run in," the .185 career hitter coming in said through a translator. "I wanted to pitch as deep into the game as I could and today I was able -- that was the least I couldve done." Bobby Abreu added a run-scoring double in a rare chance to play because Eric Young Jr. was held out with a tight right hamstring. He will be examined by a doctor before the Mets decide if the speedy outfielder needs to go on the disabled list. Outfielder Matt den Dekker is on his way to New York from Triple-A Las Vegas in case Young goes on the DL. The Diamondbacks used a miscue by Daniel Murphy in the ninth and turned a season high-tying five double plays for a 2-1 victory in the opener. Anthony Recker had a career high four hits. Pinch-hitter Ruben Tejada hit a tiebreaking single off Triple-A Reno callup Zeke Spruill (0-1) in the sixth inning for the Mets, who have won just three of 11 games. "We realize were not hitting, were not scoring runs. When you can win a game, when you can get a big hit -- Ruben had a tremendous big hit for us -- its a lift," manager Terry Collins said. "Its nice to go into the next series with a W." Murphy added an RBI single in the eighth for New York. Jenrry Mejia pitched the ninth for his third save after getting the loss in the opener. Its the first time the converted starter pitched twice in a day and he is finally feeling like a closer. "Right now I feel pretty good. Lets see how I feel (Monday)," he said. "Its unbelievable." The 33-year-old Matsuzaka (2-0) made 123 starts and one relief appearance in seven big league seasons before being called up by the Mets in mid-April. The longest of his 14 relief outings this season was 3 2-3 innings and 56 pitches. But he threw 98 pitched and allowed only three hits. Other than a three-batter sequence in the second when Aaron Hill led off with a single, Martin Prado got a favourable carom for an RBI triple and Cody Ross followed with a run-scoring groundout, Matsuzka was sharp. He struck out six, walked one and hit a batter. Matsuzaka got a run back for the Mets when he sent a broken-bat flare into left field in the second inning. "It tells you the kind of heart hes got," Collins said of Matsuzaka. "He knows we needed help." After Lucas Duda and Chris Young each stranded six runners and grounded into a combined three double plays in the first game, Collins mixed up a lineup that was 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position in the opener. They were 4 for 13 in the late game. The 40-year-old Abreu was making only his sixth start since coming up five weeks ago and he had two hits, driving in the tying run in the fifth with a double off Spruill, the Diamondbacks 26th man for the twin-bill. Tejada hit for Matsuzaka in the bottom of the sixth and had an RBI single. Spruill gave up 10 hits and three runs in 5 1-3 innings. "He did well for us. ... He gave us a chance to win," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "But we could mount no offence at all." In the opener, the Diamondbacks broke a 1-all tie when Murphy dropped a throw at second base from David Wright, trying for an inning-ending forceout in the ninth. A.J. Pollock, who doubled off Mejia (4-1), scored when Murphy dropped Wrights force attempt at second base on Owings grounder to third base. Owings homered off Rafael Montero and Wright had an RBI single off Bronson Arroyo, both runs coming in the first. Addison Reed earned his 14th save. Montero and Arroyo impressed with differing styles. The 23-year-old Montero used a 91-92 mph fastball to strikeout 10 in his third big league start. The high-kicking, slow-pitching Arroyo induced four double plays -- including inning-ending turns in the second, third and fourth innings to keep the game tied. Duda had the double play that hurt the most. With first and third, he hit a sharp grounder off Evan Marshall (2-0) to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who threw home. Catcher Miguel Montero made a perfect relay back to Goldschmidt at first base. Gibson said he lifted Arroyo after six innings because the 37-year-old right-hander had a tender elbow. "Ill be fine. Ill make my next start," Arroyo said. "Theres times when youre grinding through (stuff)." Hill had to leave the finale a couple of innings after he fouled a ball off his left ankle. "It blew up pretty big on him, the top of his ankle, so I had to get him out of there," Gibson said. "I think itll be OK, but its pretty swollen up; he couldnt hit." NOTES: Mets C Travis dArnaud (concussion) caught five innings Sunday and went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run for Double-A Binghamton in his first rehab game. ... Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said RHP Dillon Gee (strained right lat) was help out of his rehab start. He also said a June 5 return for Gee is unlikely. ... St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Chandler Catanzaro made four field goals as the Arizona Cardinals moved closer to clinching a playoff spot despite not scoring a touchdown in a 12-6 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Thursday. The Cardinals (11-3) now own the leagues best record and can secure a postseason berth this Sunday as long as the Dallas-Philadelphia game doesnt end in a tie. Arizona can also clinch with a Detroit loss against Minnesota and a Green Bay win or tie in Buffalo. Arizona, however, suffered another injury at quarterback at the hands of the St. Louis defense as Drew Stanton left the game with a right knee injury in the third quarter. He was carted off to the locker room and did not return. Stanton, who was 12-of-20 for 109 yards before exiting, started his fifth straight game after Carson Palmer tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a 31-14 win over the Rams on Nov. 9. Ryan Lindley took over for Stanton and completed four of his 10 passes for 30 yards. Larry Fitzgerald (31 years, 102 days old) became the youngest player in NFL history to compile 900 career receptions after finishing with seven catches for 30 yards. Im glad we dont have to play the Rams anymore, Fitzgerald said. Both times we played them, they banged our quarterbacks up. Arizonas 11 wins ties a franchise record which was also set in 1925 and 1948. Shaun Hill threw for 229 yards and an interception on 20-of-39 passing and Stedman Bailey caught five passes for 74 yards for the Rams (6-8). St. Louis, which was coming off back-to-back shutouts of Washington and Oakland, turned in another solid defensive performance, limiting the Cardinals to just 274 total yards and 13 first downs, but lacked a spark on offense. Its hard to win football games when you dont score touchdowns, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said. The difference in this game was our inability to get the ball in the end zone. The Rams finally converted a second-half first down as Bailey hauled in a 38- yard strike down to Arizonas 39 with 10:10 to play in the fourth quarter. St. Louis took the ball down to the 1-yard line, but Hill threw the ball away on third down and Greg Zuerlein was true from 19 yards out for a 12-6 game with 6:07 remaining. Kenny Britt caught a 22-yard dart between two defenders and Jared Cooks 10- yard catch moved the Rams to midfield. Hill hit Bailey for a 7-yard gain on second down, but his pass intended for Chris Givens on fourth down was knocked down by Jerraud Powers and the Cardinals took over on downs. After Arizona punted on its initial drive, Benjamin Cunninghams 19-yard catch moved the Rams into their opponents territory and Zuerlein kicked a 24-yard field goal for an early St. Louis lead. Frostee Rucker knocked the ball loose from Tre Mason and Larry Foote pounced on it to give Arizona the ball with 1:57 to play in the first quarter. Kerwynn Williams picked up a first down on an 11-yard run. The drive stalled at the Rams 5, but Catanzaro knotted the score with a 23-yarder. Michael Floyd outran Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins down the left sideline and made a 49-yard grab to set up an eventual 44-yard Catanzaro make for a 6-3 lead with 8:25 to play in the first half. The Rams punted the ball away on their first possession of the third quarter to Tedd Ginn Jr., who navigated his way down the field 42 yards to the St. Louis 42. Arizona, however, couldnt capitalize and gained just two yards before punting. On their next drive, the Cardinals benefited from a 36-yard pass interference penalty that moved them to their opponents 28. Two plays later, Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald sacked Stanton for an 8-yard loss. The Cardinals signal-caller stayed on the ground before hobbling off the field. Lindley took over and delivered a 6-yard pass to Floyd, which helped set up Catanzaros 51-yard field goal midway through the third. Arizona went up 12-3 when Catanzaro nailed a 46-yarder with 10:48 to play. Game Notes It was Arizonas first win without a touchdown since a 12-7 triumph over Tampa Bay on Jan. 2, 2005 ... The Cardinals have won their last three games against the Rams ... Catanzaros first field goal in the second quarter was the first points the Rams allowed in 146:33, a span of 10 quarters ... Arizona cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who was carted off the field with a left ankle injury last week, was active ... Williams rushed for 75 yards on 15 carries. In the week following Riyad Mahrezs PFA Player of the Year award, the 2013 winner returns to these shores to face Premier League opposition for the first time since his departure from Tottenham.Gareth Bale will be in the Real Madrid team for their Champions League semi-final against Manchester City - and he is in fine form too. No issue with Ronaldo Gareth Bale insists there are no problems between him and Cristiano Ronaldo. Such are the extraordinary demands at Madrid that, despite scoring the winner in a Champions League final, his three seasons with the club have not been without their difficulties. And yet, Bale has directly contributed to 28 La Liga goals this season - 18 goals and 10 assists. Thats the same total as Mahrez in the Premier League and hes managed it in a fraction of the game time.Indeed, Bales goals alone have come at a rate of one every 87 minutes this season. Thats better than both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Rivals for his role in the side such as James Rodriguez and Isco have proven nowhere near as effective despite having received some very public backing. He was jeered by Real fans in a friendly against Galatasaray and a Marca poll put him out of the starting line-up on the eve of the campaign. A similar vote in AS saw him scraping into the team but only ahead of Karim Benzema and with a fraction of the votes of James and Isco.Rafa Benitez, then manager at the time, was unconvinced by those arguments. If you analyse Bales movements, youll see they give the team respite, he told AS. Isco and James develop play between the lines, but not Gareth. He creates spaces and looks to makes runs behind the defence. As a result, Benitez looked to increase Bales involvement. Bale scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to beat Rayo Vallecano The two discussed his role in the side at the start of the season and Bale was allowed to go in search of the ball in central positions.dddddddddddd While 61 per cent of his touches in last seasons Champions League were restricted to the right flank, its been only 30 per cent this season. Hes enjoyed it. No wonder he was reportedly unimpressed when Benitez was sacked.Fortunately, Bale has found another admirer in Zinedine Zidane. As long ago as 2013, the new Real boss had confirmed as much to Sky Sports. Hes unique, said Zidane. He makes things look easy, his pace is frightening and his acceleration is unbelievable because of his ability to go through the gears in very little space. Zidane hails Bale Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane praised Gareth Bales performance against Rayo Vallecano. So while the whispers were that Benitezs exit could precipitate changes to the forward line and a chance for James to reignite his Real career, instead it is Bale who immediately produced his best form. A hat-trick against Deportivo La Coruna in Zidanes first game in charge was particularly timely. Bale has been impressed with the impact Zinedine Zidane has made since taking over in January In my opinion, his performance against Deportivo was his best display in a Real shirt, Guillem Balague told Sky Sports. Soon, Zidane was talking of Bale being a key player for the squad and someone he was determined to give all the care and support he needs. They are words that Ronaldo and the rest can hardly have failed to pick up on. Bale feels the confidence of Zidane but more than that he actually feels that Ronaldo sees him as a star, not just a friend of the president. Guillem Balague Its the fact he can now move freely and more importantly its accepted by both Ronaldo and Benzema, added Balague. Bale feels the confidence of Zidane but more than that he actually feels that Ronaldo sees him as a star, not just a friend of the president. Thats the biggest thing thats happened to Gareth Bale. And so, he arrives in form, impressing with two goals against Rayo Vallecano in a comeback win at the weekend. His first goal was a header - an eighth in La Liga this season, more than anyone else in Europes major leagues and the sort he has spoken of working on every day at Valdebebas. The second was a brilliant solo effort. Zidane rated the display as phenomenal. Head boy Gareth Bale has found the net with eight headers this season - more than any other player in Europes major leagues. As a result, the mood has changed - as it can among supporters who booed Zidane, Ronaldo and even Alfredo Di Stefano in the past. Bale is in shape and in form, a player who has grown on and off the field as a result of his experiences in Spain. He left as the best player in Britain. He returns better than ever. TORONTO -- A smiling Jon (Bones) Jones walked on to a makeshift stage Thursday to confront underdog challenger Alexander (The Mauler) Gustafsson. Always thinking of a new angle, Jones was wielding a smartphone in front of him. His view of the square-off would soon be posted on Instagram, the UFC light-heavyweight champion told the media in front of him. Jones (18-1) took to social media soon after, managing to squeeze a biblical verse, Nike and Gatorade into the same tweet. "There is nothing special about me, I just work extremely hard," he wrote. "Anything can happen." A picture below showed a smiling Jones, a Nike swoosh prominent on his hoodie, pointing to a bottle of Gatorade -- his latest sponsor. To further make his point, he added Phillipians 4:13 and the hashtags for both companies. Fighter, man of faith and six-foot-four, 205-pound billboard, Jones is currently the brightest star in mixed martial arts. "His life doesnt suck, right," UFC president Dana White said dryly. "Hes got a lot to be happy about." A victory at UFC 165 Saturday and Jones will set the record for most consecutive title defences (six) in UFC light-heavyweight history. He already holds the record for most submissions (five) by a light-heavyweight and is tied for most finishes (nine). A former junior college wrestling champion with an 84.5-inch reach, Jones size and length make him hard to penetrate and tough to defend. At 6-5, Gustafsson (15-1) is one inch taller and has good striking skills. But while the 26-year-old Swede has won his last six fights, he hasnt faced the kind of opposition that Jones has. The bookies have made Jones anywhere from a 9-1 to 20-1 favourite to beat Gustafsson. White usually dismisses such odds. But he was slightly more circumspect Thursday. "I think that theyre making lines that they dont want a lot of money going on Jones because they think Jones is going to win. Thats the way the book works," said White, no stranger to the betting window. "Jones is good, really good." About the only people who believe Gustafsson can win are those in the challengers camp, although most pundits are quick to cover themselves by saying its a sport where anything can happen. Gustafsson, a lanky likable Swede with battered ears, doesnt think he is being disrespected. "Not at all. I dont takes anything personally. I dont read too much. I dont think too much. Im going to go in there and shock the world on Saturday," he said. "Im more than prepared," he added. "I cant wait to get in there. Im just living the dream right now. Ive got a one in a lifetime shot and Im going to do the best of it." Jones, 26, believes this defence will go the way of all the others. "I think I have a lot more tools in this fight to win the fight," he said. "Im going to do all kinds of unpredictable spinning elbows, flying knees, shots, fake shots, all types of stuff," he added. "He really needs to be on his game." Jones seemed less than impressed by Gustafssons striking, saying hes not fighting a world boxing champion. "Im fighting a guy who throws punches," he said. "Alexanders boxing defence, Ive said it a lot of times now, is not that good ... Hes a good puncher, he has pretty good footwork. Not a great boxer." When the Swede stood next to Jones in front of photographers, he couldnt resist putting his arm behind the champion so he could touch the shiny championship belt slung over his shoulder. A smiling Jones pulled away. "Thats as close as youre going to get," he said. Jones joins welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre under the Gatorade flag. The Montreal MMA star has blazed the way with blue-chip sponsorships including Under Armour. Its a long way from fighters advertising the local gun shop. Jones can be forgiven for Thursdays blatant plug in that his deal with Gatorade had only been announced hours before. Jones will wear the Gatorade logo on his shorts when he walks into the cage Saturday night against the Swede. Chances are he will wear a Nike T-shirt on his walk through the Air Canada Centre. Jones, who signed with Nike in August 2012, wore a "Bones Knows" Nike shirt at UFC 152 in Toronto last fall. As for Phillippians 4:13, Jones always wears that. It is tattooed on his chest. It references the verse "I can do all this through him who gives me strength." Gustafssons ink is all about winning. He adds a sharks tooth tattoo on his arm for every win. Jones was the picture of calm Thursday as media swarmed around him. White says he has adjusted to life as champion, pulling back from going down the wrong path in the wake of a DUI charge after a May 2012 incident that saw him crash his Bentley in upstate New York. "Everything changes when youre the champion," White said. "Obviously the attention, the money, everybodys gunning after you. Theres a lot of pressure. "Jon Jones has really turned around and changed his life in the last year. Hes a young guy, he got that belt, you saw what happens when fame and money and all that stuff starts to come together. Im really happy with the way hes turned around." Jones, who meditates the day of his fight, does seems comfortable in his own skin as champion. "Its a great honour. To be the best in the world at something, and to travel to different countries and know that youre the champion of the world, its one of the coolest feelings that a man can ask for." Jeff Locke won his eighth consecutive decision, Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run homer and the Pirates hung on to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 Wednesday night. Locke (8-1) was scored upon for the first time in four home starts but extended his unbeaten streak to 16 outings. Locke, who hasnt lost since his first start of the season, allowed two earned runs on seven hits and three walks over 5 2-3 innings. "Theyre going to get their hits -- and Im also going to make my pitches," Locke said. "Im going to win some battles; theyre going to win some battles. A night like tonight theyre finding some holes and hitting the ball pretty hard at points, youve just got to try to stay consistent and dont teeter away from what you do well." The Pirates took the lead with a four-run fifth punctuated by Alvarezs 21st home run. Andrew McCutchen reached base five times, scoring twice for the Pirates (52-31), who have the majors best record and had a nine-game winning streak snapped in the series opener Tuesday. "Ill tell you what -- theres something special going on here," Locke said. "All the guys pull for each other every night. Were not out of a game, ever. And I think the Pirates of the past could get out of a game early, wed kind of get down on ourselves a little bit and think that hills too tall to climb. But nothing here these guys cant do." Delmon Young and Domonic Brown each had three hits for the Phillies, who have lost four of six. Young has 1,001 career hits. Browns two-run homer with two outs in the ninth pulled the Phillies within one, but Jason Grilli stuck out Young to seal his NL-best 28th save. Philadelphias John Lannan (1-3) fell to 1-5 in his career against the Pirates, getting tagged for four runs on 11 hits and three walks in five innings. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said, "It definitely wasnt one of (Lannans) better games." Still, he kept Pittsburgh off the scoreboard through four. The Pirates left seven men on base in that stretch. Pittsburgh loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but Locke struck out and Starling Marte bounced into a double play. "I was battling all night, and I was able to pitch myself out of a lot of jams," Lannan said. "But then I made a bad pitch to Alvarez, and that was the difference in the game." McCutchen, Sanchez and Martin hit consecutive one-out singles in the fifth, the latter driving in a run. Alvarez followed with his fourth home run over his past six games against the Phillies. "I was just up there ttrying to be ready to hit and not really sitting on anything," Alvarez said.dddddddddddd "I was just trying to go out there and put a good at-bat together." Those runs erased an early deficit for the Pirates. When Ben Revere drove in Brown with a bloop single to left with two outs in the fourth, it snapped a 24-inning scoreless streak for Locke at PNC Park. Thats the longest home shutout streak for a Pirates pitcher since Jerry Reuss did it for 34 innings in 1975. Locke had his scheduled start bumped back a day when he was forced to warm up in the bullpen during the 14th inning of a win Sunday. He had three consecutive home starts in which he did not allow a run between May 14 and Wednesday. "As much as anything, hes got a very good demeanour," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "There seems to be no panic, no urgency. He just continues to make pitches and focus on that pitch to that hitter." Justin Wilson allowed an RBI single to pinch hitter Kevin Frandsen, but -- after a Jordy Mercer error led to another Phillies run -- struck out Chase Utley to end the sixth. Jeanmar Gomez struck out pinch hitter Ryan Howard to finish a scoreless seventh and Mark Melancon worked a perfect eighth. Browns home run off of Grilli snapped a 27 1-3-inning scoreless streak by the Pirates bullpen. Brown has three home runs through nine games on Philadelphias road trip and a team-high 22 on the season. "Id like to make the All-Star team; itd be a great honour," the 25-year-old Brown said. "Im not really thinking about that right now. Im thinking about our team and how we can start winning some games." NOTES: Martins second RBI came when he doubled in McCutchen in the sixth. ... Howard was not in the starting lineup for the second time in a four-game span. Howard, who snapped out of an 0-for-22 slump with two hits Tuesday, has been bothered by a sore left knee all season. The Pirates activated OF Jose Tabata before the game and optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis. Cumpton was recalled to start Tuesdays game in lieu of Locke. ... Buoyed by thousands of Phillies fans who made the drive across the state, the announced paid crowd of 33,197 was the Pirates eighth consecutive of at least 30,000 at home. ... RHP Gerrit Cole is the first Pirates pitcher to win each of his first four career starts in more than a century. He makes his fifth major league start in the series finale Thursday. CHICAGO -- John Danks is enjoying success and making it look easy with a string of impressive performances of late. But the left-hander knows that getting to this point -- nearly two years removed from shoulder surgery -- was anything but easy. "Its been a long, frustrating road to get back to here," Danks said. "There were some days where you were having to fight doubt from creeping in. "I think Im beyond that." Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo hit two-run home runs, Danks pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Chicago White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. The slumping White Sox had managed a total of six runs in their previous four games, but busted through with a slew of clutch hits. It was plenty of support for Danks (6-5), who settled down after a somewhat slow start and gave up two runs -- one earned -- and five hits in 6 1-3 innings. In his last five starts, the left-hander is 3-1 with a 1.51 ERA. His ERA for the season is down to 3.97. "He has really gotten it together, from where he started early in the year," manager Robin Ventura said. "He has pitched to where hes always giving us a chance right now. He becomes tough when he has the feel of the changeup like that and spotting his fastball. It just seems like he has a little more on it as far as spotting his fastball." Viciedo, who was just 2 for 23 on the homestand before Tuesday, went 2 for 4. His fifth-inning blast ended a stretch of 51 at-bats without an RBI. Hunter Pence went 2 for 4 with a home run for the Giants, who have dropped four straight and seven of eight. Giants starter Matt Cain (1-5) allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- and 10 hits in five innings. "He got off to a good start," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said of Cain. "Those first two innings, he looked real sharp. He looked like he was on track. Then the third inning got a little long there, long at-bat and he ended up giving up a home run. Then he just got derailed." Pence opened the scoring with a homer in the first inning, and the Giants made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the third. The White Sox tied it in the bottom of the third as Adam Eaton singled with two outs, stole second and then trotted home on Beckhams two-run shot. Chicago took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the fourth. Jose Abreu led off with a single and one out later Alexei Ramirez and Viciedo both singled to load the bases. Alejandro De Aza popped up in foul ground on the first pitch for the second out, but Tyler Flowers drew a walk to drive in a run and make it 3-2. Eaton followed with a slow grounder to shortstop that Brandon Crawford fielded cleanly but threw wide of first base after rushing to get the speedy Eaton. Eaton was credited with a single and one RBI as both Ramirez and Viciedo scored for the three-run lead. Crawford was charged with an error for allowing the second run to score and both runners (Flowers and Eaton) to advance a base. Chicago added three runs in the fifth to break the game open. Adam Dunn had an RBI single and two batters later Viciedo hit a two-run, two-out homer for an 8-2 margin. "We needed it," Beckham said. "It was nice to break out against a good team." NOTES: Bochy was a teammate of Tony Gwynns and later managed the Hall of Famer, who died Monday. "Just a huge loss for baseball and San Diego," Bochy said. "We all know what a great player he was and a great hitter. But he is getting recognized for being such a tremendous person." ... Left-handed reliever Boone Logan agreed to a $16.5 million, three-year contract on Friday, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Under pressure in subzero weather, Colin Kaepernick kept his cool. Facing a blitz on third-and-8, the elusive San Francisco 49ers quarterback scrambled 11 yards out of trouble to set up Phil Dawsons 33-yard field goal as time expired for a 23-20 win Sunday over the Green Bay Packers in an NFC wild-card game. Doesnt matter where or when -- the 49ers keep figuring out how to beat Green Bay. "Didnt think we were going to pull it out, did you?" coach Jim Harbaugh said. When its Kaepernick and the 49ers facing the Packers, the game is never over. Even in the meat locker that was Lambeau Field, where the temperature at kickoff was 5 degrees, with a wind chill of minus-10. No sweat for Kaepernick. He went sleeveless, and didnt wear gloves. "Ive played in cold-weather games before," he said. "I feel like its more mental than anything." San Francisco plays at Carolina next Sunday in the divisional round. Kaepernick threw for 227 yards, including a 28-yard TD pass to Vernon Davis, and ran for another 98, while Michael Crabtree had eight catches for 125 yards for San Francisco. In a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the 49ers (13-4) threw the final punch. Kaepernick escaped a blitz to get to the 27 with 1:13 left. "Just trying to figure out a way to get that first down," Kaepernick said. "Had a play called, we didnt get the look that we wanted. It worked out for us." Dawson nailed the winning kick five plays later -- but only after nearly being blocked by edge rusher Davon House. He was whistled for being offside on the play, but the 49ers declined the penalty with the win in hand. Mason Crosbys 24-yard field goal tied it at 20 for the Packers (8-8-1) with 5:06 left before the 49ers final drive. Until then, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers did his best to turn into "Captain Comeback" again. After a slow first quarter, Rodgers finished 17 of 26 for 177 yards and touchdown. "Very disappointing, personally," Rodgers said. "Its frustrating not to play your best game in tough conditions. Defence holds them to 23 points. We should win that game." Kaepernick connected with a spinning Davis down the seam for a score with 10:39 left. The TD quickly answered John Kuhns 1-yard run that brieffly gave the Packers a four-point lead.dddddddddddd. That touchdown was set up after Rodgers, in the clutches of a 49ers defender, somehow managed to escape a sack on fourth-and-2 and found Randall Cobb for a 26-yard gain to the Niners 4. Eddie Lacy ran for 81 yards on 21 carries for the Packers, while Frank Gore had 66 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for the 49ers. But it was Kaepernick who was the difference-maker once again in San Franciscos fourth straight win over Green Bay. He finished 16 of 30 with the touchdown and an interception. For the second year in a row, the Packers season has started and ended with losses to the 49ers. The latest edition of whats turned into a chippy and heated rivalry took place on the worn, frozen turf of Lambeau Field. An injury-filled season for the Packers came to an end. A depleted Packers defence -- already playing without linebacker Clay Matthews -- lost two more starters Sunday in cornerback Sam Shields and linebacker Mike Neal -- but still managed to hold its own against the Niners. "Im just very proud of this team as far as their ability to continue to overcome adversity," coach Mike McCarthy said. "It hit us at every turn, it hit us again today and these guys just keep fighting and fighting." In a memorable playoff debut last January, Kaepernick ran for a quarterback playoff-record 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In the season opener in September, the strong-armed quarterback threw for a career-best 412 yards and three scores. This time, he did his damage on the ground and through the air. Kaepernick tore through the Green Bay defence for a 42-yard run, getting a break at one point after House whiffed on a tackle, to set up Gores 10-yard touchdown run that helped give the 49ers a 13-10 halftime lead. "It was unbelievable, the way he was getting the edge. I mean, just clutch," Harbaugh said. "Colin Kaepernick, I think we can all agree, is a clutch performer." Notes: It was the seventh-coldest game at Lambeau Field since 1959, and the fourth-coldest post-season game at the stadium. ... Kuhn has scored a touchdown in each of the last five postseasons. ... After a big day in the season opener against Green Bay, Anquan Boldin was held to three catches for 38 yards. ' ' '

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - On a night the Bulls played without Derrick Rose, it was time for Pau Gasol to take charge. The veteran scored nearly half of Chicagos points in a 95-87 victory over the Boston Celtics at United Center. Gasol dropped a career-high 46 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. He was truly the go-to player for the Bulls, who were without Rose due to left knee soreness. Kirk Hinrich had 16 points and Jimmy Butler contributed nine points, eight rebounds and a career-high 10 assists for the Bulls, who snapped a two-game skid. Brandon Knight scored 20 for Milwaukee, which had won its previous two games. We have to do better defensively when we see a guys got it going, Knight said about defending Gasol. We should have been able to do some different things just to slow him down. Gasols previous career-best was 44 points on March 28, 2006 when he played for Memphis. He went 17-of-30 from the field and missed only one of his 13 free throws. Gasol had 40 points through three quarters, and the Bulls pulled away in the fourth. That was always a good sign for me when I am able to get a good base in the post and finish the first couple of shots, Gasol said about playing against Zaza Pachulia. When the jumper is falling too you know youre on. It was a good overall night. O.J. Milwaukee got as close as five in the second quarter, but trailed 48-39 at the break. The visitors then went ahead briefly early in the third when Khris Middletons layup made it 51-50. Gasol responded by sinking a turnaround hook shot to start a 10-0 run. The Bucks were within 68-62 going to the fourth and shot 61 percent in the last period, but the Bulls countered by going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Terrell Suggs isnt one to get rattled. The Baltimore Ravens linebacker has made a career out of being the one who agitates, not the one who gets agitated. For a night anyway, the Pittsburgh Steelers found a way to reverse the roles.Ben Roethlisberger threw six touchdown passes and the Ravens lost their cool in a 43-23 loss on Sunday night. Baltimore turned it over twice, gave up four sacks and was flagged 10 times while losing its second straight. We didnt respond well when bad things started to happen, Suggs said. Weve got to be better. We cant be kidding ourselves anymore. We have a lot of work to do.Better get started soon. The Ravens (5-4) fell into last place in the crowded AFC North with the loss after it failed to sweep the season series from the surging Steelers (6-3), who have won three straight. Its frustrating anytime you lose and dont play the way you expect to play, but weve got to get over it and keep working on it, Baltimore wide receiver Torrey Smith said. Nobodys going to feel sorry for us.Certainly not Pittsburgh. The Ravens dominated the Steelers 26-6 in Week 2, emerging from a chaotic few days surrounding the release of running back Ray Rice by physically overwhelming the Steelers. This time, it was the other way around. Joe Flacco threw for 303 yards with two touchdowns and an interception but absorbed a series of shots from a relentless Pittsburgh pass rush. They come after you and you have to get the ball in someones hands, coach John Harbaugh said. You have to make a play to take them out of it. We didnt do enough to discourage that at all really at any point in the game. There were no such issues for Roethlisberger.A week after passing for a franchise-record six touchdowns against Indianapolis, Roethlisberger duplicated the feat to help Pittsburgh (6-3) win its third straight. Roethlisbergers 12 touchdown passes over the last two games broke the mark of 11 set by Tom Flores for Oakland in 1963 and matched by New Englands Tom Brady in 2007.Antonio Brown caught 10 passes for 138 yards and a score. Rookie Martavis Bryant hauled in two scoring receptions and has five touchdowns in three games. The renewal of one of the NFLs most physical rivalries traded its usual taut, low-scoring style for something decidedly more spectacular but no less physical. When Roethlisberger wasnt dissecting Baltimores depleted secondary with his expanding number of targets, the teams were trading punches and penalties.Just not the lead, not after a resurgent Pittsburgh defence gave Roethlisberger all the momentum he would need to continue the finest stretch of his 11-year career. We took advantage of turnovers our defence gave us, Roethlisberger said. We were slow starting but made plays down the stretch. The Ravens were in front 7-0 midway through the second quarter and the Steelers were sputtering when a little vintage Pittsburgh defence — led by suddenly youthful 36-year-old linebacker James Harrison — turned the tide.Cornerback Brice McCain raced 26 yards following a Lorenzo Taliaferro fumble to set up a 5-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger to LeVeon Bell, and Jason Worilds picked off Flacco and returned it 30 yards to put Roethlisberger in position to find Bryant for a 19-yard score to put the Steelers up 14-7.The Ravens, playing without injured cornerback Jimmy Smith, simply couldnt keep up. Roethlisberger ended the half with a perfect 47-yard strike to Markus Wheaton.Even when things went wrong, they went right for Pittsburgh. The Steelers tacked on a 2-point conversion following Wheatons score when punter Brad Wing made up for a botched hold by scrambling to his right and connecting with tight end Matt Spaeth to make it 22-10 at the break.Rather than sit on the lead, the Steelers kept attacking. Roethlisbergers 25 completions went to eight different receivers, though he relied on an old one and his new favourite to help the Steelers end a pivotal three-game homestand with a perfect 3-0 record.Roethlisberger found Brown for a 54-yard catch-and-run early in the fourth quarter to make it 29-10. Jacoby Jones responded with a 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but Roethlisberger then hit the 6-foot-4 Bryant for an 18-yard strike and capped another remarkable night with a 33-yard score to Spaeth with 1:51 remaining.I guess once you get in the groove it is what it is, Suggs said. He made some lays. His receivers made some plays for him. He played a phenomenal game.NOTES: Steelers S Troy Polamalu left with a sprained left knee in the second quarter and did not return. ... SAN FRANCISCO -- Even with standouts Bryce Harper and Gio Gonzalez on the disabled list, the Washington Nationals are shutting down the team with the best record in baseball and taking over the title as the leagues hottest club. Jayson Werth hit his first homer in almost a month and drove in three runs, and the Nationals capitalized on Matt Cains erratic start to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-2 Wednesday night for their fourth straight win. "We kind of got Cain on the ropes early, got his pitch count up, got some big hits early to kind of set the tone for the game," Werth said. "Its hard to recover from." Cain (1-4) walked the first three batters he faced before Adam LaRoches two-run single during a three-run first inning. Werths solo shot in the fifth and two-run single in the ninth provided the rest of the pop for the Nationals, who have won 10 of 12, including the last three at San Francisco. Former third baseman Ryan Zimmerman made a pair of diving catches in left field to highlight a stellar defensive effort, and Tanner Roark (5-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings to propel Washington to another win. "Were playing great as a team right row," said Roark, who struck out four and walked none. "Just keep it going. Its exciting." Brandon Crawford and Pablo Sandoval each drove in a run for the Giants, who have lost a season-high tying three straight after winning five in a row. Cains struggles might have been the most disappointing thing of all for the Giants. In his second start since a stint on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, the former ace reverted back to his early season woes against Washington. Cain gave up four runs and three hits in five innings, walking five and striking out four. "It was too much of a deficit to come back from. We needed a better start than that. I wanted some clean innings. I made it too difficult," Cain said. The finale of the four-game series is Thursday, but the NL East-leading Nationals already have handed San Francisco its first series loss since losing two of three at Pittsburgh from May 5-7. Beforee the Nationals showed up in San Francisco this week, the Giants had not lost two in a row since May 16-17 to the Marlins.dddddddddddd The Nationals are doing it by getting contributions at the plate, on the mound and in the field. After Crawfords RBI triple in the fourth, second baseman Danny Espinosa made a diving stop on Gregor Blancos sharp grounder and threw out the speedy runner at first. Zimmerman, filling in for Harper in left, also swiped another run from San Francisco in the sixth when he made a diving catch of Crawfords slicing fly after Michael Morse doubled. "Im kind of learning on the fly," Zimmerman said. "Got a good break on it. It kept tailing away. I dove and caught it. The landing wasnt very smooth, but in the end, I caught the ball." Sandoval, scratched from the starting lineup because of an illness, singled home a run as a pinch-hitter in the seventh to whittle Washingtons lead to 4-2. Zimmerman slid in to snag Angel Pagans short fly for the third out. With his back right leg almost touching the dirt, Werth went low to launch his sixth homer of the season to put the Nationals up 4-1 in the fifth. Werth, who had not homered since May 14 at Arizona, singled with two outs in the ninth off Yusmeiro Petit to extend Washingtons lead to 6-2. Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard and Jerry Blevins each tossed a scoreless inning to help Washington finish off San Francisco again. Closer Rafael Soriano had been warming up in the bullpen before Werths single. "The best part about that is we could put the big scary guy back in his cage," Werth said, "and save him for (Thursday)." NOTES: The Nationals placed catcher Wilson Ramos on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and called up catcher Sandy Leon from Triple-A Syracuse. ... The Giants traded left-hander David Huff back to the Yankees for cash. He was sent to San Francisco in January for cash after the Yankees signed Masahiro Tanaka. ... WACO, Texas -- Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty was able to smile even after talking about what an ugly game it was for the Bears offence. Maybe now people will start to believe the fifth-ranked Bears are really good. Theyre still undefeated after a 41-12 victory over 12th-ranked Oklahoma on Thursday night in their first big test of the season. "Were just talented, man. Were committed. I think thats all you can say about it," Petty said. "Its a very special team." Baylor (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) scored twice in the final minute before halftime and stretched its school-record winning streak to 12 games since a loss at Oklahoma last November. The Bears are 8-0 for the first time. Even though Baylor came in leading the nation in scoring (64 points per game) and total offence (718 yards per game) -- and was outscoring opponents by an average margin of 48 points -- many questioned how good the Bears were after getting into November without playing a ranked opponent. They have now, and they responded with an impressive victory against a team that used to routinely overwhelm them. And they did it without scoring a touchdown in the first quarter for the first time during their winning streak. "We didnt really feel like us the first quarter and a half of the game, but that has a lot to do with who youre playing," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "We were playing a team with good tradition, and tradition doesnt die easily." Petty threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, and third-string running back Shock Linwood ran for 182 yards. Oklahoma (7-2, 4-2) has a 21-2 lead in the series, but both losses have come in its last two trips to Floyd Casey Stadium for prime-time games. "Everyone talks about their offence, which is really good," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "But I knew that their defence is really good with all the seniors that they have." Running backs Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin got banged up in the game, so Linwood ran 23 times. The Bears also were missing top receiver Tevin Reese, who was without a catch before dislocating his right wrist. He spent the second half on the sideline with his arm in a sling, and Briles said afterward he hopes Reese could be back for a bowl game. "To come out with the win even though it was ugly was good for us," Petty said. Baylor trailed 5-3 after a strange sequence that started at the end of the first quarter when the Bears were penalized 38 yards on one play, and had a players ejection overturned before he made a touchdown-saving play. After Petty scored on a 1-yard keeper with a minute to go in the first half, Oklahoma gave the ball right back when Blake Bell threw an interception right into the arms of linebacker Eddie Lackey at the SSooners 38.dddddddddddd Petty ran 14 yards on third-and-10 before a double-pump throw to Antwan Goodley, whose Big 12-leading ninth TD catch was a spectacular grab with both arms fully extended. He held on for a 24-yard play that put the Bears up 24-5 at halftime. "I dont want to say we got tired, but you could tell that stuff was taking a toll on us because we kept going back out there. It showed in our play when we went back out there on the field," Sooners linebacker Frank Shannon said. "It was real frustrating, but were a team so weve got to put that behind us." Goodley made it 10 touchdown receptions he had a 25-yard catch with 9 minutes left in the game. He finished with six catches for 80 yards. Petty completed 13 of 26 passes for a season-low 204 yards. He ran 16 times for 45 yards. Bell finished 15-of-35 passing for 150 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Oklahoma had 237 total yards. The Bears are 5-0 at home against Top 25 teams since the start of the 2011 season. That includes a 45-38 win over the Sooners two years ago in a game that likely clinched the Heisman Trophy for Robert Griffin III, and 52-24 last November over Kansas State, which arrived in Waco as the No. 1 team in the BCS standings. Baylor got penalized 38 yards on one play late in the first quarter, including a targeting penalty and two flags for unsportsmanlike conduct, setting up Oklahoma at the 7. The Sooners failed to score when Bell was tackled for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the 1 by cornerback K.J. Morton, who had been called for targeting only a few plays earlier. Morton was flagged after a vicious hit on Sterling Shepard that knocked the ball loose and laid out the receiver. Officials reviewed the play and determined it was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit, overturning Mortons ejection and keeping him in the game. But the penalty still stood, and there was extra yardage tacked on for the calls against cornerback Ahmad Dixon for unnecessary roughness and then taking his helmet off while on the field. "I was amped up at the beginning of the game," Dixon said. Two plays after Bell was stopped on fourth down, Petty was sacked in the end zone by Dominique Alexander for a safety. Jalen Saunders then returned the free kick 55 yards to the Baylor 12, though the Sooners had to settle for Michael Hunnicutts 22-yard field goal. Baylor went ahead to stay wen Petty ran 5 yards for a score to make it 10-5, a drive that started with Linwood gaining 20 yards on his first carry. Oklahoma finally got in the end zone when Bell threw a 10-yard TD pass to Roy Finch on a fourth-and-3 play with 3:20 left in the third quarter. "Defensively, I thought we were extremely potent all through the game," Briles said. ' ' '

Cheap Vapormax Mens China .J. -- Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch deservedly draw the attention for what theyve done in getting the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl.STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Dak Prescott rushed for a 3-yard touchdown in overtime to lead Mississippi State past Mississippi 17-10 in the Egg Bowl on Thursday night. Prescott didnt enter the game until the fourth quarter because of an injury to his non-throwing shoulder that caused him to miss the past two games. But the sophomore led the Bulldogs (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) to their tying drive in the fourth quarter and the game-winner in overtime. Ole Miss overtime drive ended when Bo Wallace fumbled and Mississippi States Jamerson Love recovered in the end zone. Mississippi State freshman Damian Williams, the third-string quarterback, made his first career start because of injuries to Prescott and Tyler Russell. The Bulldogs are now bowl eligible for a fourth straight season, the longest streak in school history. Ole Miss (7-5, 3-5) didnt have an offensive touchdown, scoring only on a field goal and blocked punt in the end zone. Prescott completed 11 of 20 passes for 115 yards. His game-winning touchdown came on a gutsy call by Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, who opted to go for it on 4th-and-1 at the 3 instead of kicking a short field goal. The Bulldogs have won four of the last five Egg Bowls and five in a row at Davis Wade Stadium. Mississippi States Evan Sobiesk missed a 38-yard field goal wide right at the end of regulation that would have won the game. Both teams struggled to move the ball in the chilly conditions -- especially through the air. The Rebels had one good early drive but it ended with nothing after Andrew Ritters 27-yard field goal attempt bounced off the left upright. Wallace threw three interceptions before halftime and the final one was costly.dddddddddddd Mississippi States Justin Cox grabbed it at the Ole Miss 30 and the Bulldogs subsequent drive ended with Josh Robinsons 1-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead with 1:32 remaining in the second quarter. Ole Miss did nothing on its next possession and quickly punted back to Mississippi State, which looked as though it would ease into halftime with the lead. But a mistake on special teams hurt the Bulldogs when Collins Moore burst through the line and blocked Baker Swedenburgs punt after the snap was bobbled. It was recovered by little-used senior Terrell Grant in the end zone to tie the game at 7. Ole Miss grabbed the lead for the first time early in the third quarter after Ritters 22-yard field goal gave the Rebels a 10-7 advantage. The points were certainly welcome for the Ole Miss offence, but it was the teams fifth straight trip to the red zone without a touchdown, dating back to last weekends loss to Missouri. That lack of efficiency came back to haunt the Rebels. Williams played decently for the Bulldogs and avoided any major mistakes, but with the offence struggling early in the fourth quarter, Mullen turned to Prescott, who had missed the past two games with a nerve injury in his non-throwing arm. Mullen said earlier in the week that Prescott wouldnt play in the Egg Bowl, but he looked plenty healthy as he led the Bulldogs down the field on his second drive, completing several impressive passes. The drive ended with Sobiesks 36-yard field goal to tie it at 10. It was a tough night for Wallace, who completed 26 of 40 passes for 182 yards but threw three interceptions and coughed up the fumble in overtime. ' ' '

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Jim Schwartz was hired to turn around the Detroit Lions and he did it for three seasons. He failed to keep the Lions going in the right direction the next two years -- and it cost him his job. The Lions fired Schwartz on Monday, one day after their late-season slide ended with a loss at Minnesota. He had two years and nearly $12 million left on his contract. Schwartz informed the players of the decision during a team meeting. "I feel awful for him," Lions centre Dominic Raiola said. "I feel like we let him down." Team President Tom Lewand said the search has begun for what he thinks is one of the most -- if not the most -- attractive opportunities for a head coach in the NFL. "I can verify that by the number of calls we have already gotten since the announcement was made," Lewand said. "Going through a thorough process is extremely important. That doesnt necessarily it has to be a long process." San Diego Chargers offensive co-ordinator Ken Whisenhunt is among the potential candidates. Whisenhunt led the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl during a six-year run as their coach and Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is a former Washington Redskins teammate. The Lions also let offensive co-ordinator Scott Linehan and wide receivers coach Tim Lappano seek other jobs, saying the rest of the staff is under contract, including some assistants for the 2014 season. Detroit flopped to a 7-9 record this year after a 6-3 record start put the franchise in a position to win a division title for the first time since 1993. "That is the reason we are sitting here having this conversation," Lewand said. Schwartz was 29-51 over five seasons, including a 10-6 mark in 2011 that lifted the Lions to their only post-season appearance this century. The former Tennessee Titans defensive co-ordinator was hired in 2009 when Detroit was coming off the NFLs first 0-16 season. "Jim inherited a very tough job," Mayhew acknowledged. Schwartz led the Lions to two wins in his first year, six the next and to double digits in victories two years ago for the first time since 1995 to help them end an 11-year post-season drought. The Lions lost their last eight games last year after a .500 start. They collapsed again this season with four straight losses and six in a seven-game stretch -- blowing fourth-quarter leads in each setback -- after they took control of the NFC North race. Detroit and the 2000 San Diego Chargers are the only NFL teams since 1940 to lose fourth-quarter leads in seven games in a season, according to STATS. "From where we were in 2008 to where we are now its a big difference," quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "We owe a lot of that to him. Hes a really smart guy and helped us get to where we are. Obviously, we didnt win as many games as we needed to or as we should have this year." The Lions took on the personality of their demonstrative and emotionally charged coach and that wasnt always good news for them. When Detroit ran the ball instead of having turnover-prone Stafford throw late in regulation of its 23-20 overtime loss to the New York Giants in Week 16, the crowd reacted with a loud chorus of boos. Schwartz responded by looking away from the field and screaming something toward the stands. Schwartz negated a video review and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct by angrily throwing a challenge flag last season when Houstons Justin Forsett scored after two Lions tackled him, leading to a defeat during an eight-game, season-ending slide. The previous year, Schwartz had a heated exchange with San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh and had to be separated following their postgame handshake. "The stuff that happened with Harbaugh just was an incident," Detroit guard Rob Sims said. "The stuff with the fans just was an incident. Thats not an everyday occurrence." Schwartz was 12-32 in games in November or later for a .273 winning percentage that was the worst for a coach in five-plus straight seasons with a team since Denvers Lou Saban won one-quarter of those late-season games from 1967-1971, according to STATS. His .363 winning percentage overall with the Lions is the worst by an NFL coach in his first five full seasons since John McKay won fewer than 30 per cent of his games with the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1976-1980. The Lions gave Schwartz an extension entering the 2012 season, when he had one year left on his four-deal worth about $11 million. The second contract made him the longest-tenured coach the franchise has had since Wayne Fontes led the Lions from 1988-96. Bobby Ross, Gary Moeller, Marty Mornhinweg, Steve Mariucci, Dick Jauron -- on an interim basis -- and Rod Marinelli all had a chance to lead a franchise with only one playoff victory since winning the 1957 NFL title before Schwartz got a shot to be a head coach for the first time at any level. The Lions would like to hire someone, who runs a 4-3 defence and has head coaching experience, but theyre not going to overlook assistants who fit the profile theyre looking for. "The goal isnt to hire the biggest name or the most popular candidate and win the next press conference," Lewand said. "Its to win football games in 2014 and to win a championship." Cheap Yeezy 350 Black . Forward Iker Muniain scored the winner in the 70th minute after Bilbaos incessant pressure recovered the ball and sparked a counterattack inside Barcelonas half. SEATTLE -- Dallas Keuchel tried to deflect the praise of his manager and teammates after his second complete game in his last three starts. But there is no denying the stellar performances Keuchel has delivered over the last month. The Houston left-hander pitched a four-hitter in leading the Astros to a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Keuchel (6-2) struck out six, walked none and allowed just an unearned run that scored on a throwing error in the second inning. He went 8 2-3 innings in a victory over the Angels in his last start, the only thing keeping him from three straight complete games. "He is definitely in a groove right now. Its a joy to watch," manager Bo Porter said. Keuchel has been nearly unhittable in his last four starts. He has earned four victories, thrown two complete games, walked just one and struck out 28. Hes allowed just four earned runs with a 1.08 ERA over that span. "Hes been lights out," first baseman Marc Krauss said. "Hes been everything you can ask for and more lately." Keuchel said hes not trying to nibble at the strike zone anymore; an approach that cost him at times as a rookie last season. Instead, hes trying to be more aggressive with his pitches. "Im just trying to attack the zone," Keuchel said. "Im not trying to be too fine anymore. Thats what I did my rookie year and obviously I had more walks than strikeouts." "Im just trying to go out there and help the team to the best of my ability." Krauss and George Springer hit two-run homers off Hisashi Iwakuma (3-1), who allowed a season-high nine hits. Seattle took the early lead with a two-out rally in the second inning. Mike Zunino and Michael Saunders each singled to put runners on first and second. Cole Gillespie followed with a dribbler off the end of the bat up the third-base line. Keuchel fiellded the ball and threw wide of first base down the right-field line as Zunino scored.dddddddddddd Keuchel retired the next 14 batters and faced the minimum 22 batters after Gillespies single in the second. Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon wasnt as impressed with Keuchels outing. He called Keuchel "average" and put the onus on his offence for not getting the job done. "I saw average stuff," McClendon said. "We didnt swing the bats very good. At some point, youve got to stop giving credit to average pitchers. That becomes a broken record. At some point, weve got to start swinging the bats." Meanwhile, the Astros finally broke through in the sixth inning. Jose Altuve singled and Springer followed with a two-run blast to left field for his fourth homer in his last three games. It was also Springers seventh home run of the month. Krauss added his homer in the seventh to extend the lead to 4-1, matching the most runs Iwakuma allowed this season. NOTES: Houston optioned OF L.J. McClendon didnt rule out the possibility of LHP James Paxton rejoining the starting rotation following a rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday night. Paxton allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a 62-pitch outing. Paxton has been on the disabled list since April 9 with a strained left latissimus dorsi muscle. ' ' '

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Gregg Marshall, whose Wichita State team was the first to reach the NCAA tournament undefeated in 33 years, has been selected The Associated Press coach of the year. The Shockers entered the tournament at 34-0 and as a No. 1 seed. They became the first team in NCAA mens history to win its first 35 games. They lost to Kentucky in the third round and fell short of matching Indiana in 1976 as the last unbeaten national champion. Marshall led the Shockers to a No. 2 ranking in the final poll and to the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles. For the fifth straight season, the Shockers won at least 25 games. Marshall received 44 votes Thursday from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Butler homered for the second consecutive game and the Royals overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Indians 7-5 on Saturday night for their fifth straight win. A day after his pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth inning beat Cleveland, Butler connected for a tiebreaking shot in the fifth inning. It was 5-5 when he tagged Nick Hagadone for a 433-foot drive over the Royals bullpen in left field, 11 feet further than Fridays shot. "Ive never been a guy thats usually gotten distance," Butler said. "I caught the last two pretty good. Maybe Im starting to figure it out and starting to put the barrel on it. "It was an 0-1 fastball that was down and in the middle. He hit it pretty good. He put a good swing on it. Once he hit it I knew it was gone." Carlos Santana hit his third homer in two games for Cleveland, which has lost six of seven. Jeremy Guthrie (6-9) won despite giving up five runs, 10 hits and two walks in 5 2-3 innings. "I didnt feel as bad as the results were in the second inning," Guthrie said. "I just couldnt make a big pitch to get anybody out. They started banging around a little when I got a little tired. I really just felt frustrated. I understood the bullpen needed a rest today. "I wasnt certainly going to accomplish that goal as much as I wanted to after the second inning. Evans is charitably listed at 5-foot-9. His coach and teammates tease him that he looks a foot shorter. Yet he stood awfully tall for Albany on Tuesday night. Evans scored 22 points, including two clinching free throws with 12.6 seconds left, to lead the Great Danes to their first NCAA tournament victory, 71-64 over Mount St. Marys in the First Four. Evans, an often overlooked component in Albanys lineup, belied his height with nine rebounds to go with three assists. "Hes about 4-foot-8, so hes really impressive," laughed his running mate at guard, Peter Hooley, who had 20 points. "I dont think theres another 4-8 guard who could go in there and get that many boards. He did what he needed to do to get this win." It was a signature victory for the America East Conference tournament champs, who had come up empty in three previous trips to the big dance. "It means a lot," said an emotional coach Will Brown. "Theres no better feeling. Like I told our kids, were going to be in the history books at the University of Albany forever." The Great Danes (19-14) advance to meet overall No. 1 seed and top-ranked Florida on Thursday in Orlando. But that was a concern for another day. It was a wild game of incredible turnarounds, with the Great Danes bolting to leads of 13-0 and 21-2, only to have The Mount (16-17) bounce back with a 21-2 run of its own to pull even. Hooley, one of three Australians on the Albany roster, hit two free throws with 2:43 remaining to stretch the lead to 65-62. After Julian Norfleet countered with a bucket, Hooley again pounded his way to the basket and lofted a shot over a defender for a 67-64 lead at the 2-minute mark. It stayed that way with the teams missing big shots. Rashad Whack and Norfleet each missed potential tying 3s -- Whacks rolled almost inside the rim and then bounded away. "When it hit the rim, I thought it was going to go in," Whack said softly. Evans was fouled with 12.6 seconds left and hit both shots to increase the lead to five points -- and out of reach of another long-range shot. Evans was most proud of his rebounding. "They shot a lot of 3s and there were a lot of long rebounds," he said with a grin. "I was just at the right place at the right time.dddddddddddd" After playing two years of junior-college ball and sitting behind a senior starter a year ago, Brown told Evans his day would eventually come. "Hes the happiest kid in the world right now," Brown said. Norfleet then missed another 3 and Albany finally could call itself an NCAA winner. Will Miller, a freshman who came off the bench, led The Mount with 21 points, all on 3s. But he didnt get off a shot in the last 3:32 after making back-to-back 3s to draw the Mountaineers within a point. Whack added 16 points and Sam Prescott 14 for The Mount, which electrified the crowd at the University of Dayton with 3-point fireworks. The Mountaineers hit 12 of 37 shots behind the arc to time and again come back from deficits. The glut of 3-pointers was nothing new for the Mountaineers. They came in with an offence heavily dependent on shots behind the arc. They averaged 9 of 25 on 3-pointers coming in. Albany had made some racket in the NCAAs before, but had never come out on top. In 2006, the Great Danes led by double figures in the second half but lost to Connecticut, 72-59. A year later, they held their own before falling Virginia, 84-57. A year ago, as a 15 seed, they battled Duke throughout before coming up short, 73-61. Mount St. Marys was also making its fourth NCAA appearance, although it had won once before -- a victory over Coppin State in 2008 in the old format of an opening-round leading into the big tournament. Albany led 35-31 at the break, but that didnt tell the story of one bizarre half. The Mount couldnt do much right for the first 8-plus minutes. The Great Danes raced to a 13-0 lead. The Mountaineers missed misfired on their first 11 shots from the field, including six behind the arc. "A lot of teams would have folded," said Mount coach Jamion Christian. "Our guys didnt do that. They took the punch and they bounced back." Things quickly turned around, with Mount going on an 18-0 run. Like a couple of sparring partners, the teams kept trading flurries in the second half. Down 45-41, Albany went on a 10-1 run. Trailing 60-53, the Mountaineers scored nine of the next 12 capped by Millers two 3s to cut the deficit to a point. That set the stage for Evans to play like a giant. ' ' '

(SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of Atlantic Division combatants return from the NHLs Christmas break, as the Florida Panthers welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs for Sundays clash at BB&T Center. The Panthers havent played since Monday when they salvaged the finale of a home-and-home series with Pittsburgh. Florida began a four-game homestand with the shootout triumph over the Penguins and improved to 8-4-2 as the home club this season. Toronto also was able to head into the brief break on a positive note, as it posted a 4-0 victory Tuesday night in Dallas. The shutout win halted an 0-3 slide for Randy Carlyles club and was the Maple Leafs seventh victory in 10 outings. This evenings test marks the first of four scheduled encounters between the Leafs and Panthers in 2014-15. Florida, which is five points in back of fourth-place Toronto in the division standings, won three of four meetings with Toronto last season and has claimed eight of the past 12 encounters in this series. The Panthers also have won two straight, seven of nine and nine of the past 12 meetings in the Sunshine State. Florida won its third consecutive home game with Mondays 4-3 decision over the Penguins, who had posted a 3-1 victory over the Panthers in the Steel City on Dec. 20. Aleksander Barkov provided the lone goal of a seven-round shootout as the Cats claimed the extra point in the finale. After Simon Despres had his chance deflected away by Roberto Luongo to open the final round, Barkov faked a move from forehand-to-backhand up the middle and casually flipped a shot past Marc- Andre Fleury which ended the game. Florida has been no stranger to lengthy shootout battles recently, as the club has endured four shootouts lasting a total of 35 rounds in its last six contests. Jimmy Hayes scored twice in regulation and Jussi Jokinen once for the Panthers, while Luongo came up with 24 saves. Weve been beating some good teams here, Hayes said. We have to continue to put pucks in the net. Florida will continue its homestand Tuesday against Montreal before completing the stay in Sunrise the following night against the New York Rangers. The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, are making the third stop on a seven-game road trip tonight. Toronto began the epic trek with last Sundays 4-0 setback in Chicago, but the Leafs rebounded two days later when they downed the Stars by the same score. James van Riemsdyk led Torontos offense with a goal and two assists, but Jonathan Bernier played an even bigger role in the victory, stopping all 43 shots to post his second shutout of the season. Berniers 43 saves included 19 in the third period. He picked up his ninth career shutout. The win allowed Toronto to avoid its first four-game losing streak of the season. You dont want losing streaks to linger and that one was lingering long enough for us, said Carlyle. Hopefully well use this as a little bit of a breather. It was the best Christmas present we could have given ourselves. Nazem Kadri added a goal and an assist for the Leafs, who also received goal from Tyler Bozak and Mike Santorelli. Phil Kessel contributed two helpers to the winning effort. Toronto, which is three points behind Montreal for the third and final automatic playoff bid in the Atlantic, improved its road record this season to 6-4-3. The Leafs will continue the swing with Mondays tilt in Tampa and that means both Bernier and backup James Reimer could draw starts over the next two games. Bernier is 1-1-0 with a 2.58 goals against average in his career against Florida, while Reimer has a lifetime 1-3-0 record and a 3.47 GAA in this matchup. Luongo boasts a 15-7-0 record and a 2.29 GAA against Toronto and is expected to start tonight. Wholesale Custom Baseball Jerseys . (SportsNetwork.com) - Somebody will leave Toronto with a loss, as the Anaheim Ducks and Maple Leafs both put sizeable winning streaks on the line Tuesday at Air Canada Centre. The Ducks have the NHLs longest current winning streak with seven straight victories. Anaheim has yet to lose in the month of December and with 47 points is leading the race for the Presidents Trophy. Bruce Boudreaus Ducks also are 2-0 at the start of a five-game road trip and have won four straight as the guest. Anaheim owns an 11-3-2 record away from Orange County this season. The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, have won five in a row and with another victory tonight can post their longest winning streak since a six-game run from Jan. 12-21 of last season. Toronto is on a winning streak in this matchup, having won five straight since Anaheims last victory in the series on Oct. 21, 2008 at Air Canada Centre. The Leafs have won two straight and six of their last seven home tests versus the Ducks. Anaheim matched its longest winning streak of the season with Saturdays 4-1 triumph in Winnipeg. The Ducks, who also won seven straight from Oct. 11-24, last claimed eight victories in a row from Dec. 31-Jan 15 of last season. The Ducks are red hot despite playing without star winger Corey Perry, who is sidelined with a sprained knee. Perrys centerman, Ryan Getzlaf, keyed Anaheims big second period in Winnipeg on Saturday, notching the go-ahead goal to make it a 2-1 game with 8:29 left in the second period. It was Getzlafs 10th goal of the season. Jakob Silfverberg and Nate Thompson also lit the lamp in the second period for the Ducks. Andrew Cogliano added an empty-netter with 1:15 left to seal the win for Anaheim, which recorded a power-play goal and two short-handed tallies in the win. Frederik Andersen made his 18th straight start for the Ducks and turned aside 27 shots for the win. He was great in the back-to-back, Boudreau said, referring to Andersen playing Friday night in a 4-2 victory at Edmonton. He was moving around, and he was sharp. I cant make things up. It was a good game from everybody. Anaheim will cap its swing by playing on consecutive nights in Montreal and Ottawa on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Torontos most recent win came Sunday against the defending Stanley Cup champions, as the Leafs edged the visiting Los Angeles Kings in a shootout. Joffrey Lupul notched the lone goal of the tiebreaker to lift Toronto to the 4-3 victory. Lupul skated up the middle, dipped his shoulder and wristed a shot over the glove of Jonathan Quick to lead off the shootout. Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles final shooter, tried to go up high, but James Reimer got a piece of the shot with his glove to seal the win. Reimer made 33 saves and stopped all three Kings in the shootout. Mike Santorelli and Cody Franson each finished with a goal and an assist and James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Maple Leafs. Hopefully this builds confidence in our group, Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. We need to remain level headed. Toronto improved to 13-7-0 as the host and is capping a three-game homestand tonight. The Leafs will then play eight of their next nine on the road. Former Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier is 4-1-1 with a 2.01 goals against average in his career against the Ducks and he will get the call for Toronto tonight. Andersen is expected to start again tonight. He lost his only career game against the Leafs, allowing three goals in a home setback on March 10 of last season. The Ducks did recall forward goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov from his conditioning assignment with Norfolk of the American Hockey League on Tuesday, while assigning backup goaltender Jason LaBarbera to the AHL team. Bryzgalov joins the active roster after signing a one-year contract last week. Anaheim also recalled forward Dany Heatley from his conditioning assignment with Norfolk, Heatley has been limited to four games this season because of groin issues and last played for the Ducks on Nov. 9. Steve Thomas. Cory Cross. Gary Roberts. Joe Nieuwendyk. Every Sens fan can tell you with painful clarity how each of those players stung the Senators in the past. So as the Sens get set to face the Maple Leafs in a crucial game on Saturday night, I pondered a very legitimate question: Has Ottawa ever beaten Toronto in a regular season game that mattered at the Air Canada Centre? The only instance I could think of was at the tail end of the 2007-08 season, when the Senators crushed the Maple Leafs with a decisive 8-2 victory. With that win, Ottawa essentially clinched a playoff spot – although they were facing a Toronto team that had absolutely nothing to play for. The worst part is that win actually proved costly, as Leafs forward Mark Bell took out both Daniel Alfredsson and Mike Fisher in that game and neither was available for the playoffs. Even Ottawas lone meaningful regular season victory at the Air Canada Centre came with a massive asterisk. For the most part, Ottawa has enjoyed success at the ACC in the month of October. Their most memorable victories were probably the first ever shootout win in NHL history and Dany Heatleys four-goal performance in an 8-0 win. Both of those wins came just a few weeks apart in October of 2005. You could maybe toss Craig Andersons 47-save shutout performance in his Sens debut into the mix, but that victory came in February when the Senators had already given up on the 2010-11 season. In fact, that Anderson victory at the ACC was an aberration when you look at the Sens record against the Leafs towards the back half of the season. A monthly breakdown of the Sens all-time record against the Maple Leafs paints a pretty clear picture of a team that does well in the first half of the season, but fades down the stretch against their provincial rivals: October: 16-5-1 November: 110-5-1 December: 3-3-1 January: 5-5-2 February: 4-7-3 March: 7-6-3 April: 4-7-0 Of course these numbers only reflect regular season meetings, but if you were to add the playoff numbers to the mix it would only worsen the situation for the Senators.dddddddddddd In short, the Senators have won 16 times against the Leafs in the month of October in only 22 games. But that is more wins than they have against the Leafs in the final three months of the season combined – and that spans a total of 41 games. To add to the misery, the Senators record against the Leafs in February, March and April in the last five years is a woeful 2-10-0. Its not like Im dragging up ancient history and talking about the playoff series from 12 years ago. This is recent history that has not been kind to Ottawa. Ottawa has lost some memorable regular season games to the Leafs and it feels like all of them have been in the back half of the season. The infamous flu game where Owen Nolan scored the OT winner and said “Boo-hoo” about Ottawa players being sick. Or the 6-0 shellacking the Leafs laid on Ottawa in the regular season finale in 2003-04, which gave Toronto home ice advantage in their subsequent playoff series. And even Nazem Kadris hat trick last March in a 4-0 shutout win is probably near the top of the list. Torontos great regular season moments against Ottawa come in February, March and April, while the Senators big wins seem to occur in October. These are all ominous numbers and stats for the Senators, as they head into Saturday nights showdown against the Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre. The calendar has flipped to February and history is not on the Senators side. But if Ottawa wants to make the playoffs this season and head into the Olympic break with some momentum, its time they finally won a game at the Air Canada Centre that mattered for both teams. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Villanova had been living large on the other side of the 3-point line. The eighth-ranked Wildcats had made 26 3s in their last two games and they shot better than 50 per cent from beyond the arc in the wins over Providence and Seton Hall. Things were different Saturday. With St. Johns playing some tough perimeter defence, the Wildcats made just three of their 14 3-point attempts and down 56-55 with 7:44 to play. "I thought St. Johns played really well. Their defence was outstanding." Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "They did a great job of getting up on all of our people and challenging them." The Wildcats, who were doing a good job of scoring inside when the outside was dry, finally found a way to get going from the outside and a 10-1 run carried them to a 74-67 victory at Madison Square Garden. The Wildcats (15-1, 4-0 Big East) made two 3s in that run and both came off a big play by one of the teams leaders -- Ryan Arcidiacono and JayVaughn Pinkston. "Players have to make plays and JayVaughn and Ryan did," Wright said. "Im really proud of Jay to be a decision-maker not just a scorer. He kicked it out to Darren for a 3 that was a huge play." First, though, in the run was the play by Arcidiacono. He made a steal near midcourt and then took off for what looked to be a contested layup. "They are a good shot-blocking team and I knew they were coming," the 6-foot-3 guard said. "I thought I could either get it punched or bring it out. I did the smart thing and saw Kris on the other side." Freshman Kris Jenkins, who is averaging just over a 3-pointer this season, buried the 3-pointer that started the 3-point run. Pinkston made his big play after he contributed two free throws to the run. He had the ball inside and rather than go up among a bunch of big men, he passed it out to Darrun Hilliard, whose 3 gave Villanova a 63-56 lead. "Were a tough-minded team and that comes from Coach getting on us in practice and bringing us together," said Pinkston, who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats came into the game having shot better than 50 per cent from the field and 3-point range in their last three games. Against St. Johns (9-6, 0-3) they struggled from both in the first half shooting 25.9 per cent from the field (7 of 27) and 22.2 per cent from 3 (2 of 9). The game was close through the first 12 minutes of the second half with neither team having more than a three-point lead until Villanova went on a 10-1 run that gave it a 65-57 lead with 3:13 to go. "At the end they made enough plays and then some timely 3-point daggers, St. Johns coach Steve Lavin said. "They made enough to get the win because we came up empty on our end." The Red Storm missed a lot of shots inside and they went 4:40 without a field goal during Villanovas game-deciding run. Josh Hart added 14 points for the Wildcats while Arcidiacono added 13. DAngelo Harrison had 22 points for the Red Storm, who have lost three straight, while freshman Rysheed Jordan had 12. "I expected to be 3-0 and our whole team expected to be 3-0," said JaKarr Sampson, who had 10 points and nine rebounds. "We have to play with energy and heart, play with a chip on our shoulder. We have to clean up a few things down the stretch. Thats the main thing." Jenkins hit a 3 to start the big run and after two free throws by Pinkston, Hill hit his first 3 in five attempts to make it 63-56 and St. Johns called a timeout. Harrison made one of two free throws and Hilliard capped the rally with two free throws with 3:13 left that made it 65-57. The Red Storm, who finished 2 of 11 from 3-point range and were outrebounded 48-39, got as close as four points the rest of the way. Villanova finished at 35.2 per cent from the field (19 of 54) and 31.3 per cent from 3-point range (5 of 16), breaking their streak of three consecutive games at 50 per cent or better. Villanovas only loss this season was at No. 2 Syracuse. This was the 1,600th win for the Villanova program. Wholesale Yeezy 350 v2 Womens . Coach Dennis Allen made the announcement at the end of his news conference Monday, saying it was "part of the plan" that apparently took shape when Pryor recovered from an injury to his right knee in late November. "Its been a while since weve gotten an opportunity to see Terrelle in a game and I want to get him in the game and get another opportunity to evaluate him," Allen said. "We all get frustrated when were not playing, but (Pryor has) done a good job with that and hes going to get another opportunity." Pryor was the leading rusher among quarterbacks in the NFL when he suffered a knee sprain in early November. However, he has thrown only five touchdowns with 11 interceptions and has a passer rating of just 66.0. When asked why he was making the move now, Allen emphasized that he was not benching McGloin and that it is simply another chance for the Raiders (4-11) to take another look at Pryor. Whether the decision was Allens or whether it came at the urging from owner Mark Davis remains unclear. Allen has been a strong supporter of McGloins since early in training camp and has repeatedly talked glowingly about the former Penn State star. Even after making the switch back to Pryor, Allen made it clear he believes McGloin will be in the mix for the job next season. McGloin has thrown more touchdowns (eight) and fewer interceptions (eight) than Pryor but has also completed a lower percentage of passes than his counterpart. "I liked a lot of things that I saw in Matt," Allen said. "He wasnt quite as sharp as he had been earlier in a couple of the earlier games, but Ive been pleased with what Ive seen out of (McGloin) from the first moment he walked on campus here. I think we have a guy that can be in our plans for the future and Im glad hes on this football team." Its been a tricky road back into thee starting lineup for Pryor.dddddddddddd He was hurt during Oaklands 49-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 3 then aggravated the injury the following week against the New York Giants. After that game, Pryor told reporters his knee had been bothering him -- a statement he later regretted making because, in his words, it sounded like an excuse. That opened the door for McGloin, who threw three touchdowns without an interception in his first NFL start against the Houston Texans on No. 17. Oaklands offence has made only modest improvements since then and the team has lost its past five games with McGloin as the starter. In the past two games, the undrafted rookie quarterback threw six interceptions and lost two fumbles. McGloin passed for just 206 yards and committed two turnovers during Sundays 26-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers. Allen, however, declined to say whether Pryor will play the entire game against the Denver Broncos or if McGloin will be rotated in. That was the pattern the Raiders used against the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs, only in reverse with McGloin starting and Pryor coming off the bench. "Well see," Allen said. "Hes going to be the starter. I informed both of those guys this morning and well go from there. We want to get another opportunity to see, and weve said for a while now that we want to be able to evaluate Terrelle so heres an opportunity to go in and do that." Oakland went 3-5 in the eight games Pryor started before getting hurt. He has made only a few cameo appearances since then, but did not play against San Diego on Sunday. Allen gave players the day off Monday, so neither Pryor nor McGloin could be reached for comment. Two weeks ago, however, Pryor said he wasnt going to get caught up in a quarterback controversy. "The only thing I can do is control what I can control and just keep getting better," he said on Dec. 10, two days after a 37-27 loss to the Jets. "At the end of the day thats all I can control. Thats where were at." ' ' '

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers got bigger, faster and more experienced Tuesday by signing three free agents who general manager Craig MacTavish, say will significantly address a serious shortcoming in the teams on-ice performance. The Oilers jumped into the free agent market early by signing defencemen Keith Aulie (six-foot-six, 228 pounds) and Mark Fayne (6-3, 210 pounds) and left-winger Benoit Pouliot (6-3, 197-pounds). Two days earlier MacTavish traded lightweight forward Sam Gagner to Tampa Bay for 6-3, 203-pound right winger Ted Purcell. On Tuesday they also re-signed 6-3, 240-pound left winger Luke Gazdic, who had 15 fighting majors last season, to a two-year contract. "They all have size," stressed MacTavish. "We added a lot of size in the last two days. We havent touched the core group of guys we ended the season with and weve added what we think is a much more well rounded complement to those players with size and speed and puck pursuit. "All these moves are going to go a long ways to addressing a serious shortcoming in our on-ice performance and I think we can expect to be much better next year." MacTavish said he went into the day with two targets: Fayne and Pouliot. After a strong sales pitch he signed Pouliot to a five-year contract worth $20 million, got Faynes name on a four-year, $14.5-million deal and inked Aulie for $800,000 for one year. "We made a case for our situation here in Edmonton," he said. "It was a compelling story for them, as it was for me to tell. The situation is improving here, in spite of the fact that the results have lagged, but it was a compelling enough situation that at the end of the day we were able to quickly react to these players." Pouliot, 27, has played for five different NHL teams, including the New York Rangers last season when he collected 15 goals and 36 points in 80 games and 10 points in their run to the Stanley Cup final. "Pouliot was our most important addition because we needed someone with speed," MacTavish said, explaining why he agreed to the $20-million deal for the player who made $1.5 million last year in New York. "We talked about size, we talked about increasing our competitiveness and hes a guy who tracks the puck very well and pressures the puck very well. Hes a great skater and we really felt we needed to add that element." Both he and Fayne said they were eager to get to Edmonton because of the direction the team appears headed in and the young talent on the roster. "I think with everything that Edmonton has gone through and everything that is now going for them, I think its a good opportunity with the young guys and everything," Pouliot told the Oilers website. "Its going to be a good fit for me." MacTavish said Fayne brings them a guy who makes simple plays with the puck, but makes them highly effectively and is a very good defender. He thinks Aulie is one of the players with the opportunity to enhance his value on a one-year contract. "He has the opportunity because of his age and his skill set to have a significant impact on our team. When you look at the make-up of our defence now it looks like an NHL defence, which it didnt always last year," he said. The one area the Oilers didnt address is centre ice where they lack size and aggressiveness. Their No. 1 centre is Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at 6-1 but only 180 pounds. "We didnt address all of our needs today," MacTavish agreed. "Ideally we would like to be able to add a centreman. We do have some depth there but they are young, developing players. "Were still hopeful we can add a centrepiece to what weve done alreadyawe will be trying to do something in that regard." MLB Jerseys China .5 million. He didnt need to worry. The Marlies never trailed on the way to a 5-2 American Hockey League playoff victory over the Chicago Wolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal. "Its a little bit scary. Youre up 3-0 and two of those goals came pretty early," Spott said. "It definitely didnt feel like a 3-0 game. We knew they were going to come at us, they did." The Marlies used two power-play goals to grab an the early advantage while goaltender Drew MacIntyre turned back 37 shots. "It was a 60-minute effort," Spott said. "All four lines played very hard tonight." Centre Trevor Smith opened the scoring with his first goal of the post-season, a power-play goal on a short backhand at 10:54 of the first period. Toronto converted another power-play chance at 14:55 as centre Peter Holland slipped a backhand over the glove of Wolves goaltender Jake Allen. The teams were at even strength in the second when Greg McKegg scored his second goal of the playoffs at 5:02 with a slapshot for a 3-0 lead. "Once they got up a couple of goals they (played) a little freer, they felt good about themselves and it took us a while to get back on track," said Chiicago coach John Anderson.dddddddddddd The Wolves got on the board five minutes later as Christian Hanson dumped a short rebound shot past MacIntyre. Chicago winger Michael Davies cut the deficit to 3-2 at 17:26, beating MacIntyre on a one-on-one. Toronto restored a two-goal lead at 3:53 of the third period. Winger Carter Ashton slipped while shooting but his wide, wobbly shot was deflected off Allens stick into the net. The Marlies closed out the Wolves on Sam Carricks fourth post-season goal at 17:19. "There were a couple of mistakes that cost us goals," Spott said. "We didnt get in the shot lane when we should have and had a bad line change in the second period. But beyond those two mistakes I thought we played a pretty thorough road game." Allen finished with 30 saves for Chicago. In two regular season meetings this season, seven-of-eight combined goals by the Wolves and Marlies came on power plays. The Marlies claimed a 3-2 overtime win at Chicago on Jan. 17 while the Wolves had a 2-1 triumph eight days later in Toronto. The series resumes Saturday in suburban Chicago then shifts to Torontos Ricoh Coliseum next Wednesday for at least two games, and three if necessary. The post-season series is the first between the teams since 2008. The Wolves went 4-1 on the way to their most recent Calder Cup. ' ' '

SEATTLE -- On a night when starter Jered Weaver struggled at times, the Los Angeles Angels were more concerned about a reliever who only faced one batter. Weaver gave up three runs over six innings to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. It was Weavers fifth win in six starts, although the first time in eight outings he allowed more than two runs. The bigger moment of concern came when Weaver left the game. Reliever Sean Burnett, who had come off the disabled list on Friday after recovering from elbow surgery last August, left the game after getting Michael Saunders to pop out leading off the seventh inning. "He just felt something in his elbow," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We dont know exactly what, hell be going back down to Southern California (Wednesday) to be evaluated. It looks like disabled list, but well see whats going on." This was Burnetts third appearance since returning, all of them lasting just one batter. Friday marked the first time he had pitched in the major leagues since May 26, 2013. After the game Burnett managed to answer just one question before breaking down and saying he couldnt continue. "Its just a lot of frustration right now. Im trying to stay positive and well see what the doctors say tomorrow," he said. Burnetts injury marred Los Angeles second win in seven tries against the Mariners this season. C.J. Cron led the Angels with a solo home run and run-scoring double, one of four doubles Los Angeles hit in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Cron led off the seventh inning with his third homer since making his major league debut on May 3. Weaver (6-3) said he felt the day would be a struggle from the time he started warming up before the game and didnt have the command hes been used to in recent starts. "I felt all right for the most part, but I didnt feel as crisp as I had the previous starts," he said. "Its one of those games where you had to battle, and these guys put up three early runs and helped me out a little bit early, and we were able to tack on some late." After the offence gave Weaver the three-run lead in the top of the second, Seattle answered in the bottom of the inning when Dustin Ackley doubled and scored on Nick Franklins single. However, even as Weaver struggled, the Mariners were unable to really take advantage. "This guy is a proven winner. He knows what hes doing out there and is pretty crafty," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "We battled all night with him." The Angels loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth but only managed one run with Grant Green scoring as Howie Kendrick grounded into a double play. The Mariners also loaded the bases for a run in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Smoak led off the inning with his seventh home run before the Mariners loaded the bases with two outs. Weavers first pitch to James Jones sailed over the head of catcher Chris Iannetta and Ackley scored from third on the wild pitch to cut Los Angeles lead to 4-3. The Angels added another run in the seventh on Mike Trouts sacrifice fly. Roenis Elias (3-4) allowed five runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. The five earned runs were the most the Mariners rookie has allowed in his 11 career starts. "I just went out and did everything I normally do and it didnt work out today," Elias said through a translator. Ernesto Frieri pitched the ninth for his seventh save, but the Mariners made it interesting. Robinson Cano hit a two-out run scoring single, and Smoak walked before Kyle Seager ended the game with a deep fly to left-centre field. NOTES: Before the game Scioscia said LHP Wade LeBlanc would start Thursdays series finale, but after the game Scioscia said Burnetts injury may change those plans. "Well evaluate some things tonight and see which way it will go," he said. ... Cano was the DH Tuesday after getting spiked on a play Monday. ... Seattle LHP James Paxton, on the DL since April 9, had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed inflammation in his left shoulder. Paxton had a rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday but will be shut down until the inflammation subsides, which the club estimated would be five to seven days. Nike Air Max Motion Canada . The 25-year McGinn had 19 goals and 19 assists in 79 games last season in helping the Avalanche tie a franchise record with 52 wins.LONDON -- Doused in champagne by Arsenals victorious players, Arsene Wenger was soaked in success once again. The nine-year wait for a trophy finally ended Saturday and the manager, who had felt the pressure and faced derision over the drought, could finally celebrate on the Wembley Stadium pitch. Arsenal won its fifth FA Cup trophy in Wengers 18-year reign after Aaron Ramsey struck in extra time to clinch a 3-2 comeback victory over Hull. "Its a big, big moment of happiness," Wenger said. "We waited a long time for that. But the happiness is linked sometimes with the time you have to wait for it. Thats why it was a great moment at the end of the game." Especially after Arsenal looked headed for disaster early on when its defence imploded to concede two goals in the opening eight minutes. James Chester and Curtis Davies scored for a Hull side that has never won a major trophy in its 110-year history. Santi Cazorla began Arsenals fightback in the 17th minute by scoring directly from a free kick, but Laurent Koscielny took until the 71st to equalize and force the game into extra time, when Ramsey completed a slick move to score. "This ones for the manager, for the fans, whove always believed in us as well even when things werent going as well," Ramsey said. It was Arsenals 11th FA Cup win overall, tying Manchester Uniteds record. This is a team that has played in the Champions League for 16 successive years by finishing in the Premier Leagues top four but has failed to match its talent with silverware since lifting the 2005 FA Cup. "I think it was a turning point in the lifetime of this team," Wenger said. "And to know they can win in that way was very important today." But three years after a conceding a late goal here to Birmingham in the League Cup final, this looked like being another miserable day for the Gunnerse. Arsenals defence was nonexistent, breached far too easily inside three minutes by a team that only just avoided relegation in its first season back in the Premier League. Tom Huddlestone met Stephen Quinns free kick on the edge of the penalty area with a volley that was heading off-target until Chester flicked the ball with his heel into the bottom corner of the net. Before Arsenals players ccould recover, Lukasz Fabianski was picking the ball out of his net again.dddddddddddd A header from Alex Bruce, whose father Steve manages the team, hit the post and Davies fired in the loose ball from a tight angle. Arsenals fragile zonal marking system nearly gifted Hull a third in the 13th, with only Kieran Gibbs nodded goal-line clearance preventing Bruces header going in. But Cazorla gave Arsenal a much-needed spark with a piece of individual skill as the Spaniard curled in a free kick from distance into the top of the net. The search for the equalizer, though, proved frustrating with Giroud ineffective up front. But as Hull tired after the break, Arsenal seized control of the game during the second half. They were rightly aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty by referee Lee Probert when Cazorla was brought down by Davies in the area. But after Probert incorrectly gave a corner rather than a Hull goal kick, Arsenal levelled from Cazorlas set piece. Sagnas header came off Chester and dropped for Koscielny to turn the ball into the net in the 71st. Dominating an ineffective, quickly fading Hull side, the cup could have been won in the 79th but for Arsenals wayward finishing. Striker Yaya Sanogo, who had replaced Lukas Podolski, withheld challenges on the right flank before squaring to Kieran Gibbs. The left back was unmarked and had time to control the ball but managed to lift it over the crossbar from six yards out. Giroud found the target in the 82nd with a powerful strike only to be thwarted by goalkeeper Allan McGregors fine save. In extra time, it was the crossbar denying Arsenal inside five minutes after Giroud met Aaron Ramseys cross with a header. But a flowing move in the 109th ended with Girouds backheel reaching Ramsey, who slotted the winner low into the net. The title drought is over and Arsenal has a trophy to take back to the Emirates Stadium for the first time since moving there from Highbury in 2006. "We showed great strength and character today to come back to win it," the 23-year-old Ramsey said. "To score the winner in extra time is something Ive dreamed of for many, many years. Its definitely up there with the most important goals Ive ever scored." ------ Frank Griffiths contributed to this report. ' ' '
