LOS ANGELES -- Spurs guard Tony Parker sat out Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, and San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said the six-time All Star will be sidelined for quite some time because of multiple injuries. Popovich said earlier Tuesday that Parker would be out of action "for the foreseeable future" because of numerous aches and pains involving his back, groin and calf. The 13-year veteran, who played 11 minutes Sunday in the NBA All-Star game, is the Spurs leading scorer. He is also the only player averaging at least 30 minutes for Southwest Division-leading San Antonio. Last season, Parker was the only NBA player to average at least 20 points and seven assists while shooting over 50 per cent from the field and 80 per cent on free throws. "I think hes just spent, mentally and physically," Popovich said. "The last five games or so was about 65-70 per cent, at the most, and hes developed a little nagging thing every time. Hes had a shoulder and a hip and a calf and all this kind of stuff, and now its his Achilles a little bit. "All these things have added up, and I think its affected him mentally, also. I think the last three years have caught up with him -- playing a whole NBA season, and for the whole summer qualifying for that European championship that they finally got this year. Im just looking at the big picture and trying to get him whole for the stretch." Popovich watched Parkers first 5 minutes during the All-Star game before changing the channel, but didnt think Parker did further damage by playing. When asked about the minimum number of games Parker would miss, Popovich said: "I dont think about that. Im just going to go with it and see when I think hes ready to go again," he said. "Im not going to speculate on how long or how many games, because I dont know." Spurs forward and defensive stalwart Kawhi Leonard missed his 12th straight game because of a broken bone in his right hand. "Its still painful for him to catch the ball and shoot the ball," Popovich said. "We want to get him into one-on-ones and two-on-twos and let him get banged around a little bit first in practice situations, rather than throwing him into a game after four weeks, so he can get confident with it. "He tried to shoot a little bit over the break, and again today. After about 10 or 12 shots, it started to get painful and stiff again. The doctors say its healed and calcified and that sort of thing, but hes got to get through the pain and get used to the little glove that hes wearing." Popovich also addressed remarks made by former NBA coach George Karl on ESPN that he "heard whispers" indicating 14-time All-Star Tim Duncan was thinking about retiring after the season despite having a $10.4 million option for next season. TORONTO - Kevin Pillar was in centerfield for a fourth-straight game on Saturday, maximizing an opportunity at consistent playing time by swinging a better bat, hustling on the base paths and playing all out defence. Pillars doing his best to refute the old saying that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. "Thats what any young player wants, just a little consistent playing time to make the adjustments, to show you belong at this level, show you can play," said Pillar. "I come to the yard ready to play everyday whether Im in the lineup or not. I cant remember the last time I played centrefield four days in a row but Im pretty happy about it and hoping we can start winning some games." Pillar entered Saturdays action 4-for-12 in three games since his recall from Triple-A Buffalo. On Wednesday night he turned a single through the left side into a double, hustling from the moment he left the batters box. On Friday, Pillar made a head-long, diving catch of a Brian McCann shallow flyball to end the fourth inning. Hes making what already was an interesting situation even more complicated. Colby Rasmus did serve as the designated hitter on Friday but otherwise has been relegated to the bench over the four-game stretch. SAN ANTONIO - James Harden scored 28 points and Dwight Howard had 15 points and 20 rebounds, leading the balanced Houston Rockets to a 111-98 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. Each of Houstons starters scored in double figures as the Rockets improved to 2-0 against the Spurs this season, with both victories coming on the road. They also moved within 3 1/2 games of San Antonio (22-7) for the lead the Southwest Division. Chandler Parsons and Terrence Jones each scored 21 points for the Rockets (19-11), who shot 52 per cent from the field. Jeremy Lin had 13 points, eight assists and just one turnover. While some players merely solidified their standing on big boards and mock drafts, several others saw their Combine results either boost or drop their placing in the mind of scouts and general managers across the league. Some notes from the NFL Combine Two-Horse Race A look at the most recent batch of mock drafts has two players showing up more often than any others at the top spot. One wont surprise you – South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney – but one certainly could – UCF quarterback Blake Bortles. While questions about his work ethic may knock Clowney out of the top spot, his blistering 40-yard dash time (4.53) ensures that if he does fall, it wont be very far. Bortles meanwhile impressed both on the field and off. Almost all draftniks and experts consider the once unknown QB to be a legit top end prospect. Of the 15 expert mock drafts gathered for TSN.cas database, Bortles had the most first overall picks of any player. Quarterback Battle While mock drafters are slotting Bortles into the first pick (owned by the Houston Texans) more than any other quarterback, that doesnt necessarily mean hes viewed as the top quarterback. Of the 15 expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, Bortles had just the third highest average draft position. First was Texas A&Ms Johnny Manziel with an ADP of 3.1 followed by Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater (3.9) and then Bortles at 4.7. Dont Forget Me While hes not in the same boat as Manziel, Bridgewater, or Bortles, Fresno States Derek Carr reportedly had a very strong NFL Combine showing, particularly while interviewing with teams. At this point Carr appears to be a mid-first round pick at best but his showing has some quarterback-needy teams considering passing on one of the top three QBs early in the draft to fill other positions, while hoping to land Carr later on. There are reports the gap between the Big Three and Carr is not very wide. Moving Up The biggest benefactors of the NFL Combine, among the early picks at least, were Auburn OT Greg Robinson and Buffalo LB Khalil Mack. Robinsons athleticism seems to have solidified him as the top offensive tackle on the board and boosted his projected status from Top 10 pick to Top 5. Robinson could even hear his name as early as second overall to the St. Louis Rams. Mack is another former potential Top 10 pick that could easily find his way iinto the Top 5 come May.dddddddddddd While his destination is hard to pinpoint at this point in the evaluation process, respected NFL Network draftnik Mike Mayock said he would consider Mack with the first overall pick. Thats high praise! Moving Down The rise of Robinson and Mack is having adverse effects on players of similar talent at the same position of the two in Jake Matthews and Anthony Barr. Once considered two of the top three players in the draft (alongside Clowney) by some, Matthews and Barr are no longer locks to be Top 5 picks and thats in large part due to Robinson proving hes the better offensive tackle, and Mack proving hes far closer to Clowney than originally thought. At this point it wouldnt be shocking to see Barr fall out of the Top 10 picks (ADP currently 8.9) while even Matthews could see himself suffer the same fate (ADP currently 5.9) the way things are playing out. To be fair, in Barrs case, Mack isnt the sole reason the UCLA pass rushers stock is falling; only 15 reps on the bench press could scare away a few teams. Lions targeting a CB The Detroit Lions need help at cornerback and most draftniks expect them to get it at the draft. Of the expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, 86% of them have the Lions taking a cornerback 10th overall. The only question in their minds is if it will be Oklahoma States Justin Gilbert, taken by the Lions in 53% of mock drafts, or Michigan States Darqueze Dennard, taken by Detroit in 33% of mock drafts. The current draft landscape lays out with a slight drop off after the top nine players. From there its still anyones guess as to who leads the second tier of players. Many mock drafters see the Lions filling a need and taking whichever cornerback they have ranked the highest. Wide Receiver Battle This position battle is unlike the quarterback battle as Clemson standout Sammy Watkins is the clear cut top pass catcher in this years draft. The battle is for the second best receiver with USCs Marqise Lee losing his spot to Texas A&Ms Mike Evans in 80% of mock drafts gathered. The receiver class is very deep this year with good pass catchers still likely to be available midway through the second round and if Lee finds himself engulfed in the second tier of receivers, hes no lock to hear his name on the first day of the NFL Draft. The true battle could be between Evans and North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron. The difference between their ADP is currently only a couple of picks (Evans: 13.8 to Ebron:16.0). ' ' '

David West scored 25 points, Paul George added 22, and the Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 94-91 on Sunday night. Indianapolis native Gordon Hayward had 21 points and Derrick Favors scored 17 for the Jazz, nine of them in the first eight minutes as Utah opened a 14-4 lead. CHICAGO -- A person familiar with the situation says the Chicago Cubs have interviewed San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria for their managers job. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the search, confirmed reports by several media outlets. The interview took place in Southern California on Monday. The person also said the Cubs will interview Tampa Bay bench coach Dave Martinez this week. Chicago fired Dale Sveum after going 127-197 the past two seasons while hoping to develop young players. Renteria is known for his teaching ability and has managed in San Diegos and Miamis minor league systems.
