LOS ANGELES -- Spurs guard Tony Parker sat out Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, and San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said the six-time All Star will be sidelined for quite some time because of multiple injuries. Popovich said earlier Tuesday that Parker would be out of action "for the foreseeable future" because of numerous aches and pains involving his back, groin and calf. The 13-year veteran, who played 11 minutes Sunday in the NBA All-Star game, is the Spurs leading scorer. He is also the only player averaging at least 30 minutes for Southwest Division-leading San Antonio. Last season, Parker was the only NBA player to average at least 20 points and seven assists while shooting over 50 per cent from the field and 80 per cent on free throws. "I think hes just spent, mentally and physically," Popovich said. "The last five games or so was about 65-70 per cent, at the most, and hes developed a little nagging thing every time. Hes had a shoulder and a hip and a calf and all this kind of stuff, and now its his Achilles a little bit. "All these things have added up, and I think its affected him mentally, also. I think the last three years have caught up with him -- playing a whole NBA season, and for the whole summer qualifying for that European championship that they finally got this year. Im just looking at the big picture and trying to get him whole for the stretch." Popovich watched Parkers first 5 minutes during the All-Star game before changing the channel, but didnt think Parker did further damage by playing. When asked about the minimum number of games Parker would miss, Popovich said: "I dont think about that. Im just going to go with it and see when I think hes ready to go again," he said. "Im not going to speculate on how long or how many games, because I dont know." Spurs forward and defensive stalwart Kawhi Leonard missed his 12th straight game because of a broken bone in his right hand. "Its still painful for him to catch the ball and shoot the ball," Popovich said. "We want to get him into one-on-ones and two-on-twos and let him get banged around a little bit first in practice situations, rather than throwing him into a game after four weeks, so he can get confident with it. "He tried to shoot a little bit over the break, and again today. After about 10 or 12 shots, it started to get painful and stiff again. The doctors say its healed and calcified and that sort of thing, but hes got to get through the pain and get used to the little glove that hes wearing." Popovich also addressed remarks made by former NBA coach George Karl on ESPN that he "heard whispers" indicating 14-time All-Star Tim Duncan was thinking about retiring after the season despite having a $10.4 million option for next season. "I guess people say whatever they want to say," Popovich said. "George must have his reasons, I dont know. I havent talked to George about such things." Mike Piazza Jersey . Adding playoff teams. But Thames surprised his coach -- and most of the 9,602 in attendance -- when he whipped a pass to Dwayne Polee II, who drained a three-pointer with four seconds left to give the Aztecs an improbable come-from-behind 67-65 victory that extended their winning streak to 19 games. "It was like the Red Sea parted," Polee said. "I wasnt surprised. X is a real unselfish player, and if there was one person open, he was going to find them." Thames finished with 23 points for San Diego State (20-1, 9-0 Mountain West), but it was his steal at midcourt in the final minute and his second assist of the game that saved the Aztecs, who trailed by 14 points in the second half. "What can you say about Xavier Thames?" Fisher asked. "You cant tell me that hes not playing as well as anyone in America right now." Thames said he was very close to taking a shot that would have tied the score. But at the very last second, he changed his mind. "I had a pretty decent look, but I saw DP out of the corner of my eye," Thames said. "I was going to shoot a floater but (Ryan) Watkins was going to contest it. Then I saw (Anthony) Drmic sink down. It was on the tip of my fingers (to shoot). It was pretty close." Close is the typical result when the Aztecs and Broncos (15-8, 5-5) play. The past six meetings between the schools have been decided by six or fewer points. San Diego State eliminated Boise State from the past two conference tournaments and won 69-66 last month in San Diego. "Theyre a good matchup for us, and were a good matchup for them," Thames said. "We know were always going to get a great game for them." Mikey Thompson led the Bronccos with 16 points and Thomas Bropleh and Derrick Marks both added 15.dddddddddddd "I just feel awful for these guys right now," Boise State coach Leon Rice said. "They are giving everything they have. We just havent finished." Boise State led the final 18 minutes of the first half and the first 15 of the second before a scoring drought allowed the Aztecs to rally. After Bropleh banked in a three-pointer to give the Broncos a 57-43 lead with 13:37 to play, Boise State only made one field goal in the next 11 minutes and the lead disappeared when Thames scored his seventh consecutive point to give his team a 61-59 lead with four minutes to play. Boise State finally got on track, getting two free throws and a layup from Thompson and a basket from Marks to retake the lead at 65-62. Thames made a steal in the final minute and hit two free throws after being fouled, and after Marks missed a jumper, the Aztecs were in position for the biggest play of the game. "That was a tough, gutty character-type game for us," Fisher said. "We stayed with it and found a way to win." Thames said there was some motivation to keep the winning streak going. With its meteoric rise to No. 5 in the poll, the Aztecs expect to get every teams best shot the rest of the way. "We talked at halftime about that," he said. "We said, You know they are going to rush the court if they win. We didnt want that to happen." Josh Davis had 10 points for San Diego State, which won despite turning the ball over 15 times and allowing Boise State to shoot 51 per cent from the field and make eight three-pointers. "They just kept hitting shot after shot," said Polee, who finished with nine points and was 1 for 1 on three-point attempts. "Everything they threw up was going in. We just had to buckle up." Percy Harvin is reportedly headed to New York. According to FoxSports.com NFL Insider Jay Glazer, the Seahawks have agreed to a deal to send Harvin to the New York Jets in exchange for a conditional draft pick. He added the trade is contingent upon Harvin passing a physical. Harvin has 22 receptions in 2014 according to STATS Inc, with 12 of those coming behind the line of scrimmage. He has averaged six yards per catch, which is worst among NFL wide receivers averaging at least two receptions per game. A six-year NFL veteran, Harvin has played 60 career NFL games between the Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings. Harvin signed a six-year, $67 million contract with the Seahawks prior to the 2013 season. That deal reportedly included $25.5 million in guaranteed money. However, he would appear in just one regular season game during the Seahawks championship 2013 campaign. He has 303 career receptions for an average of 11.4 yards per catch. He has scored 30 career touchdowns, including 20 receptions, five rushes and five kickoff returns. He underwent hip surgery prior to the 2013 season and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. He was activated prior to Seattles Week 11 tilt against the Vikings, but experienced inflammation in hip which kept him out for the remainder of the regular season. Harvin would be in the line-up for the Seahawks at Super Bowl XLVIII, though, and returned the opening kick-off of the second half 87 yards for a touchdown. CARROLL GOES FOR THIRD PLATE WITH AMIS HOLIDAY Trainer Josie Carroll, who has already won two Queens Plates (Edenwold in 2006, Inglorious in 2011), will try for a third one on Sunday with Ivan Dalos homebred Amis Holiday. Aboard will be Luis Contreras, who teamed with Carroll to win not only the Plate, but the Woodbine Oaks with the filly Inglorious. Amis Holiday, a son of Harlans Holiday-Victorious Ami, has only started twice this year, finishing a good fourth to Mr. Speaker in the Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland on April 19, before a troubled third, just a neck behind the disqualified winner and Plate rival Asserting Bear, in the Marine Stakes at Woodbine on May 25. "It was a great effort," said Carroll, about the Marine. "But it was a disappointing race because the horse didnt get a clean trip and show what he could do. That was a little troubling." About the Lexington, "He ran a tremendous race. For the amount of time hed been off, I was very impressed with what he did." Last year, Amis Holiday broke his maiden at first asking and then stepped up to stakes company and promptly won the Grade 3 Grey. That effort made him the 3-5 choice to win the rich Coronation Futurity but he endured a difficult trip, ending up fifth before being disqualified. Since the Marine, Amis Holiday has been busy with four solid works, including a sharp five furlong breeze in 59 3/5 seconds last Sunday. "Hes just a very nice, very easy horse to train. He does everything you ask him to." About the Plate, Carroll, who is also the only female conditioner to ever win the race, added, "Its a big field and this horse has already had a couple of troubled trips. He just really needs a clean trip. Hes coming up to the race in really good order. Hes bred to go a distance. Everythings right about him. Now we just have to see if things work out on the day." ONE DESTINY ON EDGE, BUT SET FOR RACE One Destiny is still touch and go to make the final field for Sundays Queens Plate, but hes been training like hes ready to run a career race. The son of Dance to Destiny is currently ranked 16th on a list of 16 horses (by purse earnings) expected to start in the 155th edition of the 1 ¼-mile event. If two more horses do enter, One Destiny could be on the outside looking in as a maximum of 17 are allowed in the gate for the race. Trainer Alec Fehr, who also owns a piece of the Ontario-bred with Winston Penny, knows the potential storyline. "Are we going to get in? Were kind of on the edge, arent we?" he wondered. The answer to the first question will be answered definitively on Thursday morning at the breakfast draw for the race. But on Monday, Fehr spoke assuredly about the current condition of the horse, who has one win in three 2014 starts. "Hes doing really fine," Fehr said. "He had a really nice work (on Sunday; a bullet five furlongs in :59, breezing). Hes come out of the work in good order and very sharp today. All is well." Fehr says his tactical speed will serve the horse well. "If you look at his races, he really didnt get to run in any of his three races. Hes got any kind of speed. He can be a six-furlong horse or a mile and a quarter horse. He can be wherever in a race, but Id like to be close to the front (in the Plate)." Justin Stein, who won the 2012 Queens Plate aboard Strait of Dover, gets the call on Sunday. RHYTHM BLUES LOOKS TO ORCHESTRATE PLATE WIN NO. 3 FOR GONZALEZ Will this years edition of the Queens Plate be the same old song for two-time winning trainer Nick Gonzalez? In 2010, it was Big Red Mike who stepped up to the mike for Gonzalez and hit No. 1 on the Plate chart. Last year, it was Midnight Aria who had the veteran horseman humming a winning Queens Plate tune. This year, hes hoping Rhythm Blues will take centre stage in front of a packed house in the "Gallop for the Guineas." "My one thought all along is that he would get better the more he raced," said Gonzalez, of the chestnut son of Tale of the Cat. "His speed figures have gone up each time. I thought he ran a credible race in the Plate Trial (Rhythm Blues was fourth to We Miss Artie in the 1 1/8-mile Plate prep on June 15). He can still get better and hopefully, he is at his best on the big day." Sporting a record of one win, one second and two thirds from eight starts, the Hillsbrook Farms silk-bearer has raced at Delaware, Parx, Gulfstream Park and Keeneland, with his past two efforts coming at Woodbine. "Hes a stalker, not a speed horse," offered Gonzalez. "I dont see him being too far out of it. He isnt afraid to be in the mix, inside, outside, wherever. Weve had good fortune on two occasions to win this race. Hopefully, we can have some luck again this time." At their worst, theyve played beneath the low level of some pretty dreadful competition. A week after laying their latest egg against one of the NFLs worst teams, the Steelers get a crack at another one Monday night as they visit the Tennessee Titans. You can follow all the action LIVE on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5 with coverage beginning at 8:15pm et/5:15pm pt. Pittsburgh (6-4) had its best rushing day in eight years with 264 yards in a 37-19 win at Carolina in Week 3, then lost at home to Tampa Bay the following Sunday in a result that remains the Buccaneers lone victory. Ben Roethlisberger took his turn as the star in wins over Indianapolis and Baltimore to cap the Steelers 3-0 midseason homestand, throwing six touchdown passes in back-to-back weeks as Pittsburgh put up 94 points, but once again the shelf life on Pittsburghs positivity was short. The Steelers fell behind 17-0 after one quarter last Sunday against the Jets, and Roethlisbergers lone TD pass came with just 1:16 left in a 20-13 loss to a New York team that was 1-8 coming in. Its the NFL, if you dont show up ready to play your type of game, youre going to lose, wide receiver Lance Moore said. Our last game was a perfect example of that. Were hot. We came in high and mighty and a team came in and played better than us. Struggling against some of the leagues lightweights has been a somewhat alarming trend since Mike Tomlins arrival in 2007, particularly away from home. Pittsburgh has played nine road games in the second half of its schedule against teams with a sub-.300 winning percentage, and the Jets loss was its sixth in those contests. The Steelers have a minus-15 turnover differential in those games. The ability is there, its just about going out and doing it, defensive end Cam Heyward told the teams official website. We have to have our focus and mindset on the Titans this week. We cant forget what happened, but we have to move past it. We have to move in the right direction and clean up the stuff that put us in trouble this past week. Pittsburghs early hole against the Jets continued another noteworthy road trend. Since the start of last season, the Steelers have been outscored 88-26 in the first quarter away from Heinz Field. Theyve held an 85-56 edge in the first 15 minutes at home. Tomlins team has allowed an NFL-high 36 points on its opponents first offensive possession, but the Titans (2-7) have oonly come away with one field goal the first time theyve had the ball.dddddddddddd Tennessee looked great in the first quarter last Sunday at Baltimore before reverting back to the form thats seen it score the leagues fewest points. The Titans had 142 yards and a 7-0 lead after 15 minutes but were held to 68 yards on 30 plays the rest of the way in a 21-7 loss. Early in the first half we did a lot of good things to kind of counteract their guys, rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger said. We just got to continue to ... play like that for 60 minutes. Mettenberger hasnt been bad in his first two starts, completing 63.2 percent of his passes with three TDs and two interceptions, but hell want to focus on getting the ball out sooner against Pittsburgh. Baltimore switched to primarily zone coverage after its banged-up secondary struggled in man, and Mettenberger was sacked five times over the final three quarters while struggling with his reads. You try to have an internal clock, that lets you know when its time, but with the defensive linemen that they have, the clock goes a lot faster, Mettenberger said. I know I need to play a lot smarter. This is a quarterback driven league and I have to play better. Mettenbergers task could be tougher without tight end Delanie Walker, who leads the team with 512 receiving yards but is questionable after being carted off against the Ravens with a concussion. Walker was cleared to practice this past week, but must be checked by an independent neurologist before he can play. The Steelers have eight sacks in two games this month but have allowed four of the five QBs theyve faced on the road to post a passer rating of at least 109.3, though the outlier also happened to be a rookie from the AFC South. Pittsburgh pressured Blake Bortles into a pair of interceptions in a Week 5 win at Jacksonville, improving to 18-2 against rookie signal-callers since Dick LeBeau returned as defensive coordinator in 2004. Opening more holes in the running game could be just as significant in boosting that record as confusing Mettenberger. The Steelers have run for just 91 yards on 42 carries in their past two games, and havent scored on the ground since Week 3. LeVeon Bell and LeGarrette Blount might find the Titans defence slightly more accommodating. Tennessee has allowed an AFC-worst 4.53 yards per carry since October, including 363 yards and four touchdowns in its last two losses. The Steelers were held to 31 yards on 15 carries as Bell missed a 16-9 Week 1 loss to the Titans last season. ' ' '

Carlos Gomez had three hits with an RBI and the Brewers extended their winning to six games with a 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. The Brewers wins have all come on the road during the streak. They came to Philadelphia following a three-game sweep at defending World Series champion Boston. "It sure was (impressive)," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of the trip. "Great pitching, some big hits, bullpens doing a great job. Everythings working. Guys are getting some big hits right now." They battered the Phillies with 25 runs and 38 hits in the three-game sweep. Milwaukee has batted .320 and has outscored opponents 42-18 during the streak. "Were scoring some early and then getting to those late innings and adding on," Roenicke said. Ryan Braun had two hits and an RBI, ending the series 6 for 12 with 10 RBIs while increasing his lifetime total to 24 RBIs in 21 games at Citizens Bank Park. Braun opened the series by homering three times in Tuesdays 10-4 win. Khris Davis had two hits and two RBIs for the Brewers, who return home to host Pittsburgh on Friday night. Milwaukees 6-0 road start is its best since starting the 1987 season 7-0. "It was kind of a whole team effort on this trip and were excited to keep it going," said Jonathan Lucroy, who doubled. Marco Estrada (1-0) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, striking out six and walking two, to earn the victory. "Not only with our pitching, but with our offence, it was well played overall," Estrada said. "Its the way you want to do it, were hitting, were pitching, its the way we just have to keep doing it. Obviously, its tougher on the road to do, but we did it. It just shows what kind of team we are. Were a pretty good team." Marlon Byrd homered and had two RBIs for the Phillies, who lost their fourth straight. "The good news is they are leaving town," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Now we have to concentrate on gaining some momentum starting (Friday)." Philadelphias Chase Utley had two hits after returning from a two-game absence because of the flu. Utley batted .458 with two homers and six RBIs in his first six games prior to the illness. Cliff Lee (2-1) struck out eight and walked none, but he also allowed eight hits that resulted in three runs in six innings. Lee has allowwed 29 hits in three games.dddddddddddd "Theyre a good hitting team and they showed it in the whole series," Lee said. "They flat-out beat us." Byrds shot to left in the second put Philadelphia ahead 1-0. The Brewers took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth on Aramis Ramirezs RBI double and Davis RBI single. Milwaukee added a run in the sixth on Davis two-out RBI double. Philadelphia responded with a two-out run in the bottom of the sixth when Byrd beat out a chopper to third with the bases loaded. Estrada then got Domonic Brown to fly out to centre to end the bases-loaded threat. Milwaukee added three runs in the seventh. The Brewers got some help when Carlos Ruiz elected to throw to second on pinch-hitter Logan Schafers sacrifice bunt intended to move Rickie Weeks to second. Ruizs throw pulled shortstop Jimmy Rollins off the bag and put runners on first and second with no outs to set up the big inning. Defensive miscues have been a problem all season for Philadelphia, which entered with nine errors in eight games and several plays, such as Ruizs, that havent been ruled errors but have been costly miscues. Gomez singled home Weeks, Jean Segura drove in Estrada and Brauns sacrifice fly scored Gomez. All three runs were charged to righty reliever Jeff Manship, who faced three batters without recording an out. Milwaukee extended its club record of consecutive innings with a hit to 22 innings when Braun singled to right with two outs in the first. Lee retired the Brewers in order in the second, striking out the side, to end the streak. Brown made an excellent diving catch to take a hit away from Scooter Gennett in the ninth. It was the third diving catch off the bat of Gennett in two games. Notes: The victory gave Milwaukee its first sweep of the Phillies in Philadelphia. ... NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova reached the finals of the Connecticut Open for the third straight year, beating Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-1 on Friday. She will face a close friend, Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia, for the title. The 68th-ranked Rybarikova beat Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-2, 6-4 in the first semifinal. Kvitova, ranked No. 4, bombarded Stosur with 11 aces, nine in the first set, improving to 5-0 against the Australian in hard-court matches. "It was hard to pick up her serve," Stosur said. "Certain big points, shed go to my forehand, then my backhand, so that was difficult. Kvitova broke Stosurs serve to take an early 3-1 lead, one of her four service breaks in the match. She did not get much of a challenge on her own serve, facing just four break points. Kvitova clinched the first set with three aces in the last game and cruised from there. "I knew that Sam would keep her eye little bit on her backhand (because) I have a left serve," Kvitova said. "I was trying to mix it, as she doesnt know where its going to be. Probably that was good idea." Kvitova won the tournament in 2012 and lost to Simona Halep in last years final. But she came into New Haven having played just three times since winning her second Wimbledon title, losing in her second match in Montreal and her opener in Cincinnati. "I think its important to have this before the U.S. Open," Kvitova said. "Im really glad with my form now." Rybarikova may be in the best form of her career. The 25-year-old broke Giorgi in the first game and breezed through the first set in 34 minutes. The 22-year-old Italian could not solve Rybarikovas serve, failing to convert on 11 break points. The hard-serving Giorgi, ranked 38th, also double-faulted seven times with just two aces. "It was very important for me to hold my serve, because I knew that she could make these double-faults. She can struggle on her serve," Rybarikova said. "So I was really focusing to hold my serve." Rybarikova mixed up the pace throughout the match, stretching out points with slices and drop shots. That seemed to frustrate Giorgi, whose power game was not working. "Its just a little bit that she has an A plan and no B plan," Rybarikova said. "Shes a young player. If shes going to learn to have a B plan, I think shes going to be a very good player." Rybarikova becomes the lowest-ranked player to make New Haven finals, her first in a premier-level event. She has four lower-level WTA titles on her resume, but her ranking dropped over the past year from the 30s into the 60s. She contends it was the result of unlucky draws, playing top-20 players such as Caroline Wozniacki, Lucie Safarova and Ekaterina Makarova in the early rounds of recent tournaments. She beat this tournaments top seed, the second-ranked Halep, in the second round. "Its not easy to beat all the top-20 players," she said. "But, of course, sometimes I have to beat these players, and it was this tournament." Scarpe Nike Economiche . He made another correct read. TORONTO - Kevin Pillar was in centerfield for a fourth-straight game on Saturday, maximizing an opportunity at consistent playing time by swinging a better bat, hustling on the base paths and playing all out defence. Pillars doing his best to refute the old saying that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. "Thats what any young player wants, just a little consistent playing time to make the adjustments, to show you belong at this level, show you can play," said Pillar. "I come to the yard ready to play everyday whether Im in the lineup or not. I cant remember the last time I played centrefield four days in a row but Im pretty happy about it and hoping we can start winning some games." Pillar entered Saturdays action 4-for-12 in three games since his recall from Triple-A Buffalo. On Wednesday night he turned a single through the left side into a double, hustling from the moment he left the batters box. On Friday, Pillar made a head-long, diving catch of a Brian McCann shallow flyball to end the fourth inning. Hes making what already was an interesting situation even more complicated. Colby Rasmus did serve as the designated hitter on Friday but otherwise has been relegated to the bench over the four-game stretch. The Blue Jays said Rasmus had a stomach virus in the middle of the week. Obviously, hed recovered by the time the Yankees arrived in town. Anthony Gose is expected to be recalled when rosters expand on September 1. That leaves five legitimate outfielders (Jose Bautista, Melky Cabrera, Rasmus, Pillar, Gose) vying for playing time at three spots. Bautista isnt going anywhere. Cabrera isnt going anywhere. So, barring the unforeseen and the odd day off for either Bautista or Cabrera, it appears to be three guys competing for playing time in centrefield. "Kevs playing good right now," said manager John Gibbons. "Ride him while hes hot, anyway. Hes swinging the bat and playing some good defence." The club has been waiting for Rasmus to get on one of his patented hot streaks, something which hasnt happened for a protracted period of time this season. About to experience his first kick at the free agency can, Rasmus could help himself (monetarily) and the Blue Jays (contributing to wins) by going on a September tear. The ballclub, however, must be realistic about its postseason chances (slim) and in looking to the future, may use September to determine whether Gose and Pillar could form a platoon in 2015. "I dont know what well do when all those guys get here, you know," said Gibbons. BUEHRLES INNINGS With five scheduled starts remaining, Mark Buehrle needs to pitch 33 innings to get to 200 for the season. Its a number particularly important to the 35-year-old, whos won at least 10 games for a 14th consecutive season and is looking to extend his run of throwing 200-plus innings to a 14th-straight year. "Yeah, it means a lot," said Buehrle. "I mean its the goal I set every year. Obviously its going to come to an end sometime, whether its the result of a bad year or retirement. Its one of those things I still, in my mind, want to get to and if I dont, like I said its got to come to an end sometime but Ill get home in the offseason and itll be disappointing if I dont get there." Manager John Gibbons is eager to help Buehrle achieve the mark. With off-days factored in, Buehrles last scheduled start is to be the Thursday, September 25 series finale with the Mariners. "Its important for us, too," said Gibbons. "Wed love to see him get that." Gibbons wont rule out throwing Buehrle in relief on the final day of the season, against Baltimore, if hes a couple of innings away from getting to 200. NEW LOOK LINEUP Its just one move but it had ramifications for six players. Manager John Gibbons, desperately looking for an offensive spark, moved Munenori Kawasaki into the two-hole usually occupied by Melky Cabrera. That pushed each of Melky Cabrera (third), Jose Bautista, Adam Lind, Edwin Encarnacion and Dioner Navarro down a spot. "(Kawasaki) usually gives you a good, tough, battling at-bat," said Gibbons. "He really works the pitchers well. It just kind of lengthens the lineup a little bit. Try something different." ENCARNACION STRUGGLING Edwin Encarnacion entered Saturdays action struggling since his return from a six-week absence with strained right quadriceps. In 12 games, Encarnacion had pieced together a .152/.235/.283 slash line with one home run and seven hits (three doubles). The Blue Jays were hoping getting Encarnacion and Adam Lind (fractured right foot) back in the lineup would be the cure to what ailed them. During a 7-17 August, that hasnt been the case. "Its a timing thing," said manager John Gibbons. "I thought when he first came back he was on a lot of pitches, just fouling them off. This time, hes still a little bit out of whack. We need him to be good, lets face it. He needs to just get his at-bats and hopefully he catches fire because when he does hes awful dangerous." Fake Jordan 11 . SAN ANTONIO - James Harden scored 28 points and Dwight Howard had 15 points and 20 rebounds, leading the balanced Houston Rockets to a 111-98 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. Each of Houstons starters scored in double figures as the Rockets improved to 2-0 against the Spurs this season, with both victories coming on the road. They also moved within 3 1/2 games of San Antonio (22-7) for the lead the Southwest Division. Chandler Parsons and Terrence Jones each scored 21 points for the Rockets (19-11), who shot 52 per cent from the field. Jeremy Lin had 13 points, eight assists and just one turnover. The Spurs have dropped two of three and split their last six games. They are just 3-6 over the last month against teams with a record above .500. Super sub Manu Ginobili led San Antonio with 22 points, and Tim Duncan added 11 points and 14 rebounds. Kawhi Leonard had 13 points, but Tony Parker was held to six points on 3-for-11 shooting. San Antonio never recovered after Houston raced out to a 27-9 lead. The Spurs were unable to stop Parsons long shots, Hardens drives, Howard in the paint or Jones on the boards for follow ups. After trailing by 18 points in the first half, San Antonio made a couple of charges in the second half but couldnt get the defensive stops necessary to complete the rallies. Leonards three-point play on Howards fourth foul pulled San Antonio to 71-64 with 4:47 left in the third. The Spurs closed to 73-71 before Harden and Lin began draining long jumpers to help the Rockets pull away again. Harden closed out the victory, scoring 16 points in the final quarter. While some players merely solidified their standing on big boards and mock drafts, several others saw their Combine results either boost or drop their placing in the mind of scouts and general managers across the league. Some notes from the NFL Combine Two-Horse Race A look at the most recent batch of mock drafts has two players showing up more often than any others at the top spot. One wont surprise you – South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney – but one certainly could – UCF quarterback Blake Bortles. While questions about his work ethic may knock Clowney out of the top spot, his blistering 40-yard dash time (4.53) ensures that if he does fall, it wont be very far. Bortles meanwhile impressed both on the field and off. Almost all draftniks and experts consider the once unknown QB to be a legit top end prospect. Of the 15 expert mock drafts gathered for TSN.cas database, Bortles had the most first overall picks of any player. Quarterback Battle While mock drafters are slotting Bortles into the first pick (owned by the Houston Texans) more than any other quarterback, that doesnt necessarily mean hes viewed as the top quarterback. Of the 15 expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, Bortles had just the third highest average draft position. First was Texas A&Ms Johnny Manziel with an ADP of 3.1 followed by Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater (3.9) and then Bortles at 4.7. Dont Forget Me While hes not in the same boat as Manziel, Bridgewater, or Bortles, Fresno States Derek Carr reportedly had a very strong NFL Combine showing, particularly while interviewing with teams. At this point Carr appears to be a mid-first round pick at best but his showing has some quarterback-needy teams considering passing on one of the top three QBs early in the draft to fill other positions, while hoping to land Carr later on. There are reports the gap between the Big Three and Carr is not very wide. Moving Up The biggest benefactors of the NFL Combine, among the early picks at least, were Auburn OT Greg Robinson and Buffalo LB Khalil Mack. Robinsons athleticism seems to have solidified him as the top offensive tackle on the board and boosted his projected status from Top 10 pick to Top 5. Robinson could even hear his name as early as second overall to the St. Louis Rams. Mack is another former potential Top 10 pick that could easily find his way iinto the Top 5 come May.dddddddddddd While his destination is hard to pinpoint at this point in the evaluation process, respected NFL Network draftnik Mike Mayock said he would consider Mack with the first overall pick. Thats high praise! Moving Down The rise of Robinson and Mack is having adverse effects on players of similar talent at the same position of the two in Jake Matthews and Anthony Barr. Once considered two of the top three players in the draft (alongside Clowney) by some, Matthews and Barr are no longer locks to be Top 5 picks and thats in large part due to Robinson proving hes the better offensive tackle, and Mack proving hes far closer to Clowney than originally thought. At this point it wouldnt be shocking to see Barr fall out of the Top 10 picks (ADP currently 8.9) while even Matthews could see himself suffer the same fate (ADP currently 5.9) the way things are playing out. To be fair, in Barrs case, Mack isnt the sole reason the UCLA pass rushers stock is falling; only 15 reps on the bench press could scare away a few teams. Lions targeting a CB The Detroit Lions need help at cornerback and most draftniks expect them to get it at the draft. Of the expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, 86% of them have the Lions taking a cornerback 10th overall. The only question in their minds is if it will be Oklahoma States Justin Gilbert, taken by the Lions in 53% of mock drafts, or Michigan States Darqueze Dennard, taken by Detroit in 33% of mock drafts. The current draft landscape lays out with a slight drop off after the top nine players. From there its still anyones guess as to who leads the second tier of players. Many mock drafters see the Lions filling a need and taking whichever cornerback they have ranked the highest. Wide Receiver Battle This position battle is unlike the quarterback battle as Clemson standout Sammy Watkins is the clear cut top pass catcher in this years draft. The battle is for the second best receiver with USCs Marqise Lee losing his spot to Texas A&Ms Mike Evans in 80% of mock drafts gathered. The receiver class is very deep this year with good pass catchers still likely to be available midway through the second round and if Lee finds himself engulfed in the second tier of receivers, hes no lock to hear his name on the first day of the NFL Draft. The true battle could be between Evans and North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron. The difference between their ADP is currently only a couple of picks (Evans: 13.8 to Ebron:16.0). ' ' '

MADRID, Spain -- At an age when most cyclists have already retired, Christopher Horner is getting the best results of his life. The 41-year-old American veteran completed the biggest victory of his career on Sunday, winning the Spanish Vuelta to become the oldest champion of one of cyclings three-week grand tours. "Ive been a professional for almost 20 years so this represents a lifetime of hard work," Horner said. "A grand tour is always a goal for a cyclist to show how good of a rider you are. The memories will last forever." Having effectively decided the race in the northern mountains over the last three days, Horner navigated the final flat stage without mishap to arrive in Madrid together with his RadioShack-Leopard teammates and with a safe grip on the leaders red jersey. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy and Spaniard Alejandro Valverde-- both former winners-- completed the podium. The previous oldest winner for one of the three grand tours-- the Vuelta, Tour de France and Giro dItalia-- was Fermin Lambot, who won the 1922 Tour at the age of 36. Besides being the oldest, Horner is also the first American to win the Vuelta. "Many riders winning in their 20s and early 30s have small children, but mine are at the age where they can appreciate what dad is doing," Horner said. "When I get back, it will be quite the topic at home." Horner, who will turn 42 next month, beat nearest challenger Nibali by finishing ahead of the Italian in each of the final three mountainous stages before Sundays 110-kilometre (68-mile) ride from Leganes to Madrid. Michael Matthews of Australia won the 21st and final stage in a sprint through Madrids city centre. "We only had four other teammates to help with the sprint today, but everyone did their job 100 per cent to help me get the win," Matthews said after his second stage win at this Vuelta for Orica Greenedge. This edition of the Vuelta, the 68th, had been crafted to favour strong climbers with 13 of its 21 stages set in the mountains. And Horner made the most of it, consistently pulling away with his high riding stance and a wry smile on his face while his younger rivals agonized behind him on the summit finishes. "I loved this course. When I first saw the design I knew it was perfect for me and my style of racing," Horner said. The veteran rider was not among the favourites entering the race, but he quickly joined them upon winning the third stage. That made him the oldest rider to ever win a stage at a grand tour, breaking the former record held by Pino Cerami, who won a Tour stage at 41 years, 2 months. Saturdays decisive stage saw Horner resist Nibalis repeated attacks before leaving him behind in the fog as he surged up the Alto de LAngliru peak, increasing his lead from three to 37 seconds. "Yesterday you saw how much effort Nibali put in to try to win this race," Horner said. "It was no walk in the park for me. It was probably the hardest victory Ive ever had in my career, and possibly the hardest race Ive had in my career." Horner completed the grand tour in 84 hours, 36 minutes, 4 seconds. Nibali remained 37 seconds behind, followed by Valverde 1:36 back. Horner turned professional in 1995. His previous wins included the Tour of Georgia in 2003, the Tour of the Basque Country, a northern region on Spain, in 2010, and the Tour of California in 2011. Euskaltel-Euskadi, the financially troubled Basque team that Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso is considering sponsoring, finished as the best team at the race and the only won not have a member retire. HEROES St. Louis Blues – After rolling the San Jose Sharks for seven goals, for the second time in a week, the Blues have a bunch of players on hot streaks. GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There he was, Julius Peppers -- the Green Bay Packers prized off-season acquisition -- taking runs at the quarterback and dropping back in coverage in a No. 56 jersey that looked a bit snug. It was just an off-season workout in late May, but boy did the addition of the 6-foot-7 Peppers look good to coach Mike McCarthy. "Just the way he moves -- he looks awesome in 56," McCarthy said. "Were a little worried about finding a shirt to fit him." Should be able to sew something together by September. Its not often that a team gets to add a 287-pound pass rusher whose 118 1/2 sacks rank him second in the NFL since entering the league in 2002. Making Peppers move from the NFC North rival Bears even more noteworthy is that he signed with a team that typically doesnt make splash in free agency. "I was a little shocked," linebacker Clay Matthews said. "But obviously ... Im happy to have him on this side of the ball." Green Bay won a third straight NFC North title last season despite a slew of injuries. The defence missed Matthews the most after the linebacker was sidelined much of the year with a broken right thumb. The Packers defence sagged in the second half, about the same time that quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down with a collarbone injury. So part of coach McCarthys plan for the off-season was to look for more impact players on defence, whether through moving pieces around and developing players or adding fresh bodies from free agency and the draft. Enter Peppers, a salary cap hit by Chicago in the off-season. The eight-time Pro Bowler, 34, signed a three-year deal with Green Bay after finishing with just seven sacks in 2013, his lowest total in four seasons with Chicago and the fewest for him since he had a career-low 2 1/2 with Carolina in 2007. Linebacker A.J. Hawk didnt think Peppers lost a step after watching him fly around on a warm spring day in Green Bay. "He runs like hes 18. If theres ever a genetic freak that was put on the planet, its Julius.dddddddddddd Hes just a specimen," Hawk said. So what was it about the subpar 2013 season then? "I felt fine last year," Peppers said. "Circumstances around me and the team, you know, led to certain things. But as far as me and how my body feels, I feel great." Getting a chance to play with Matthews, who is one of the leagues most dangerous pass rushers when healthy, was part of the appeal for Peppers in picking the Packers. Matthews -- who was flexing his right hand with a black armband during practice -- said his recovery is coming along fine, and that for now he "didnt see there being any hindrance toward beginning the season, toward camp." The ideal scenario for the Packers might be Matthews and Peppers bookending the line as pass rushers, with Peppers making what he indicated would be a smooth transition to more of an outside linebacker in the Packers 3-4 set. "Theyre not asking me to do very much different except for drop back a little bit," Peppers said. "Other than that, its pretty much almost the same as playing defensive end." As a newcomer, he might benefit from McCarthys emphasis this off-season to seemingly simplifying the defence a little. The mantra seems to be "more personnel, less scheme" to make more people available and add flexibility, following the injury-riddle 2013 season. The addition of Peppers, in effect, could fit well into that philosophy given his history as a hybrid defensive end-linebacker. The Packers also transitioned Mike Neal into a similar role last season with some success. "Weve learned some hard lessons here of late, the last couple years of maybe playing some players that probably werent quite ready because of the scheme of were playing of utilizing your best players, and thats a trap you just dont want to fall into as a coach," McCarthy said. "Everybody prepares this way. Were just tilting a little more that way than we have in the past." ' ' '
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers played just well enough to beat an inferior opponent, which has been the way most of their five-game win streak has gone. David West scored 25 points, Paul George added 22, and the Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 94-91 on Sunday night. Indianapolis native Gordon Hayward had 21 points and Derrick Favors scored 17 for the Jazz, nine of them in the first eight minutes as Utah opened a 14-4 lead. A dunk from Favors cut the Pacers lead to 89-86 with a minute left to play, and West missed a jumper to give Utah a chance to tie with 35 seconds remaining. Hayward cut the Indiana lead to one, but Lance Stephenson sank two free throws to seal the win. "This was a mental toughness win," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "I thought we played with extraordinary effort for four quarters." The Jazz made things interesting in the games fourth period thanks to Hayward, who had 10 of his 21 points in the final 15 minutes. His final five points came in the final minutes. Ian Mahinmi came off the bench to score nine points for the Pacers and provide key minutes, as Roy Hibbert struggled to contain Favors. Utah came out of halftime to score eight unanswered points and force Indiana to call an early timeout. The Pacers retook the lead when Mahinmi was fouled on a layup. Mahinmi made the free throw to put Indiana up 60-58. "Ive pretty solid on defence all season long," Mahinmi said. "My shot blocking has been up. My timing is good." CJ Watson, starting for the injured George Hill, scored 13 points for the Pacers. Hill sat out his second straight game with a bruised shoulder. After coming off the bench to score 17 in a win over Boston a night earlier, Evan Turner struggled in his reserve role. Turner, acquired from Philadelphia on Feb. 20, scored eight points and shot 2 of 9 in 20 minutes. But the Pacers got a boost from Mahinmi and Watson to pull out another win against an opponent they might have easily beaten earlier in the season. After two close tilts against Milwaukee and a come-from-behind victory in Boston on Saturday night, Indiana survived a scare against one of the Wests worst teams. But all night long, Utah buckled under pressure from one of the NBAs best defensive teams. The Jazz finished with 18 turnovers, which led to 24 points for Indiana. George went down hard after being fouled on a drive to the basket late in the third quarter. George slammed to the floor and appeared to hit his head, but remained in the game to sink both free throws. Hayward rebounded from a slow start to put together one of his best games since January. In his fourth time playing in his native city, he shot 8 of 15 from the field after being held scoreless until the beginning of the second period. He scored seven straight points in the third quarter, keeping the Jazz in the game while the rest of the offence sputtered. "I thought I was quiet in the first half, but I was proud of the way we came back and fought against a team with a real good record, especially here at home," Hayward said. Hayward, who led Butler to an NCAA championship game appearance in 2010, averaged 12.2 points on 34.1 shooting in 12 games in February. He came into the game having scored only 21 points in four games in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Chad Billingsley, still recovering from right elbow surgery, also was put on the DL. Beckett has a bruised thumb and Kemp is rehabbing from ankle surgery. The moves are retroactive to March 19, so all three players are ineligible to return until April 3. That means theyll miss at least a three-game series in San Diego from March 30 to April 2. Left fielder Carl Crawford also was inactive. He is on paternity leave. Arizona optioned pitchers Charles Brewer and Zeke Spruill to the minors. The Dodgers and Diamondbbacks open the Major League Baseball season Saturday (4 a.ddddddddddddm. EDT) at Sydney Cricket Ground. In addition, the Dodgers optioned backup catcher Tim Federowicz and reassigned outfielder Joc Pederson, pitcher Zach Lee and infielder Miguel Rojas to the minors. The moves left the Dodgers payroll -- including cash transactions in trades -- at a record $239.8 million for 34 players. But that probably wont be their opening day payroll, which will be calculated as of the March 30 game against San Diego, when all teams have to be down to 25 active players. The Diamondbacks were at $112.7 million for 30 players. Both teams came to Australia with 30 players for the two-game series, which ends Sunday. Beckett, Kemp and Billingsley did not make the trip. PITTSBURGH -- Expanded instant replay has a new fan in Starling Marte. At least, that is, when the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the right side of it. The speedy outfielder was called out, then ruled safe on a replay review with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Pirates over San Francisco 2-1 Tuesday night and ending the Giants six-game winning streak. It was 1-all when Marte tripled off the right-field wall against Tim Hudson. Marte slid into third, got up and bolted home when the relay from second baseman Ehire Adrianza skipped by third baseman Pablo Sandoval for an error. Sandoval recovered to throw home and plate umpire Quinn Wolcott initially ruled Marte was tagged by San Francisco catcher Buster Posey. A brief review showed Martes right hand touched the plate before Poseys glove swiped Martes chest. Marte joked he likes replay "sometimes" but never doubted which way the call would go one the umpires took a longer look. "I know I was safe," Marte said. "It was just about waiting for the umpire to make the decision." Pirates manager Clint Hurdle raced out of the dugout to challenge the call. He wasnt sure at the time whether Marte was safe for not, but figured Marte deserved the benefit of the doubt. "Its an aggressive play," Hurdle said. "We continue to talk about being aggressive. We cant use the safety brakes." A night after rallying from a six-run deficit to win a five-hour, 13-inning marathon, the Giants were stunned when Martes drive and Adrianzas miscue ruined an otherwise spectacular effort from Hudson (4-2). The veteran right-hander allowed two runs on five hits in 8 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking one. The only Pirate to advance past second base over the final seven innings was Marte. "Replay is going to provide the final conclusion," Hudson said. "It is what it is and youve got to accept it. But its frustrating to be to the end of a call that cost you the ballgame. Ive seen calls that were closer than that but werent overturned." Tony Watson (3-0) worked around two singles in the ninth to earn the win. Marte scored both Pittsburgh runs and Ike Davis added two hits as the Pirates won for just the fourth time in their last 13 games. Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton pitched eight sparkling innings, giving up one unearned run and three hits, walking two and striking out three. "The pitches he made to the top four hitters, theyre as good as Ive seen him make," Hurdle said. "He had those guys, there were some hard at-bats. There was good pitching. He hit his spots, changed his speed." Both teams were looking for length out of their starters after San Franciscos 11-10 the night before left their bullpens taxed. Going deep into games hasnt been a problem for Hudson, who worked with his typical efficiency while giving the relievers some needed down time. The 38-year-old has thrown at least seven innings in all seven of his starts this season. He had little trouble getting through eight innings, keeping the Pirates off-balance with his typically impeccable control. Marte reached on an infield single with one out in the second and moved to third on a single just inside the first-base bag by Davis before scoring on a groundout by Tony Sanchez. San Franciscos only run came in the second as Sanchezs throwing issues from behind the plate resurfaced. Brandon Belt hit a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third when Sanchezs throw sailed into shallow centre field. Belt scored on Adrianzas sacrifice fly. NOTES: Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez was rocked in his second rehab start while recovering from right knee inflammation. DENVER -- The Colorado Avalanche are back in the post-season. But they may have to move on without Matt Duchene. If Semyon Varlamov continues his breakout season, the Avalanche might not miss their leading scorer. Varlamov had a season-high 47 saves and Colorado clinched its first playoff berth in four years with a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Center John Mitchell had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who moved past Chicago into second place in the Central Division with 100 points in what might have been a costly victory. Duchene suffered a left knee injury on the opening shift Saturday when he collided with teammate Jamie McGinn near the Sharks blue line. He fell to the ice and then gingerly skated to the bench. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Sunday. "Well know more after that," coach Patrick Roy said. "Its not good news for him and its not good news for us. Its the way its been all year." Despite the injuries -- Colorado has lost top-six forwards Alex Tanguay and P.A. Parenteau -- the constant has been Varlamov. He came through again against the relentless Sharks, who threw 74 shots at him. Colorado blocked 25. "Im guessing he was the first star," San Jose coach Todd McLellan said of Varlamov. "He should be." Down a player, Varlamov made up for it with an outstanding performance. He stopped 20 shots in the third period, many during the final minutes when the Sharks were trying to get the equalizer. His 37 wins are the most in the NHL and a big reason the Avalanche reached 100 points for the first time in 10 years. "Hes been tremendous," captain Gabe Landeskog said. "I think its safe to say we wouldnt be here without him." Colorado was a mainstay in the playoffs when the franchise moved to Denver in 1995. After winning the Stanley Cup for a second time in 2001, the Avalanche reached the Western Conference finals the following season before heading into lean times. Now they have a chance to return to the glory years with a young, eager group. "Were certainly not satisfied with just squeaking into the playoffs, we want to do damage," Landeskog said. Mitchell moved up to centre Colorados top line, and came through with a big power-play goal to give Colorado a 3-1 lead at 6:32 of the second period. "It came right to me slow enough so I could get a forehand shot and I just one-timed it into the back of the net," Mitchell said. "I was just at the right place at the right time." Paul Stastny and Cody McLeod also scored for Colorado. Varlamovs strong play beforehand helped Colorado maintain a 2-1 lead. The Sharks outshot the Avalanche 11-3 in the second, many of those coming early when they were trying to tie it. Joe Pavelski and Dan Boyle scored for the Sharks, who are 1-2-2 in their past five games but still hold a slim lead for first place in the Pacific over Anaheim. Goalie Alex Stalock had 19 saves for San Jose before being pulled for an extra attacker in the final minute. "I thought we played extremely well, thought we generated a lot of chances," Joe Thornton said. "Its just sometimes you dont win those types of games." Boyle cut the lead to 3-2 when he took a pass from James Sheppard and scored off Varlamovs left shoulder 2:03 after Mitchell. It was his 10th goal of the season. The Sharks got a chance to tie on a 4-on-3 power play after Ryan OReilly took his first penalty of the season, a minor for playing with a broken stick. Stastnys 26th goal 1:33 into the game gave Colorado a 1-0 lead. Pavelski tied it on the power play less than two minutes later with his 38th. The Sharks had another power-play chance midway through the first, but McLeod sneaked behind the defence, took a long pass from Nick Holden off Boyles glove and beat Stalock to give Colorado a 2-1 lead. "I took my eye off the puck for a fraction of a second to make sure I wasnt going to get drilled," Boyle said. "I just caught a piece of it and missed it. Thats an unfortunate bounce." AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Josh Smith was booed when he went to the scorers table to check in, booed when he touched the ball and booed again when he went to the line to shoot free throws.Just over a month after Detroit waived the high-priced forward, Pistons fans gave him an unfriendly welcome when he returned to the Palace on Saturday night as a member of the Houston Rockets. Detroit beat Houston 114-101.Smith, who spent nine seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, was with the Pistons for less than a season and a half. He said the boos didnt bother him too much. That wasnt emotional to me, because I wasnt here long enough to feel any kind of way about it, Smith said. If that happened in Atlanta, it would be tougher for me, but it didnt affect me at all.Smith said before the game he had no ill will toward his former team, which went on a seven-game winning streak immediately after cutting him.I still have friends on this team, where we hung out and we had fun times and fun memories together, Smith said. I have no hard feelings. When they went on that winning streak, I knew the process and the hard work that we had to put in right after Labor Day weekend, all the way into training camp — it was finally kind of paying off.Detroit cut Smith loose in late December. The Pistons started playing well after his departure, and Smith caught on with one of the leagues best teams and is contributing.I kind of sat back and looked at it, and I saw it as being a blessing, Smith said. I had an opportunity now to play for a contender and really try to do something special this season. The Pistons won those first seven games after waiving Smith, but Brandon Jennings ruptured his left Achilles tendon last weekend, and Detroit began struggling again.Smith, meanwhile, has for the most part come off the bench for the Rockets. His scoring is down, but his shooting percentage has improved.Ive enjoyed Josh. Working with him has been great. In our system, we try to get him to do things that we think he does real well, Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. Have him drive, have him play-make, have him kick out, get defensive rebounds, push it down the floor. When the Pistons cut Smith, coach Stan Van Gundy wanted to adjust the offence, and he said it may not have been fair to Smith to reduce his role at this point in his career.Smith has looked and sounded comfortable with the idea of being a reserve, but Van Gundy said that doesnt mean a move like that would have helped the Pistons much.Hes in a totally different situation with a totally different team in a totally different role. The people around him are not even similar, Van Gundy said. How he would have played here probably wouldnt have changed a lot. Just, he would have been coming off the bench. Moments later, the San Francisco Giants ace was swarmed by teammates near the mound after punctuating one of the great postseason performances in any sport. Some of them stopped first to congratulate Sandoval, who was on his back after catching the last out. And on the edge of the celebration, Buster Posey dropped to his knees, a smile on the catchers face that showed both happiness and relief. This is some dynasty, and it almost unraveled on an error. Bumgarner pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen and the Giants held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 in Game 7 on Wednesday night, capturing their third World Series title in five years. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, after Bumgarner had retired 14 batters in a row, Alex Gordon sliced a hit into left-center field that bounced past Gregor Blanco and went to the wall, suddenly giving the Royals a sliver of hope. Left fielder Juan Perez bobbled the ball on the warning track and Gordon made it all the way to third on a two-base error. Im not sure what happened. I didnt see it, Bumgarner said. But I was starting to get a little nervous. He was digging around a little bit and its a big outfield. It was a little nerve-wracking. But Bumgarner threw six fastballs to Salvador Perez, who popped up into foul territory near third base, where Sandoval squeezed it before falling onto his back with his arms in the air. Relief, said Bruce Bochy, who has managed each of these three championship teams. Because anything can happen -- a bloop, a wild pitch. Theres a man on third base there and (Bumgarner) just made some great pitches. Bumgarner pitched on two days rest after throwing a four-hit shutout in Game 5 on Sunday for his second win of the series. He was named World Series MVP, to no ones surprise, after throwing 21 innings and giving just up one run, nine hits and one walk. Sandoval, due to be a free agent, reached base four times in Game 7 and scored twice, including the go-ahead run on Michael Morses single back in the fourth inning. Sandoval had three hits, giving him an MLB-record 26 this postseason. The Royals, trying to win a title for the first time in 29 years, came up a win short. They forced Game 7 with Tuesdays 10-0 blowout, extending their magical season for another day, but scored their only runs Wednesday in the second inning. You work all year to climb to the top of the mountain and then Boom! You fall back down and have to restart next season, Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. The wild-card Giants, an 88-win team that finished six games behind the rival Dodgers in the NL West, rode a Bumgarner shutout to an 8-0 win in Pittsburgh on Oct. 1 and finished their title run two days shy of Halloween. Bumgarners wins in Games 1 and 5, and his five-inning save in the clincher, cemented his role at the age of 25 as a postseason star on a Giants team that has carved an odd dynasty into recent baseball history. The Giants have made the postseason only three times in the last 11 years -- winning the World Series each time. Wednesdays celebration followed titles in 2010 over Texas and 2012 over Detroit. They snapped a nine-game losing streak by road teams in World Series Game 7s, becoming the first team to win that way since the 1979 We Are Family Pirates, who clinched in Baltimore. Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt had two hits apiece in Game 7, including back- to-back singles in the second inning after Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie grazed Sandoval with a pitch leading off. Morsse and Brandon Crawford followed with sacrifice flies for the Giants first two runs.dddddddddddd. Hours later, the Giants celebrated in customary fashion by spraying champagne in the locker room. So used to their backs being against the wall during their three title runs, the Giants got their eighth straight win in an elimination game -- including six on the road. After beating Pittsburgh in the NL wild-card game, they never sniffed another elimination test until the World Series. They closed out Washington in four games in the NL division series and needed just five games to beat St. Louis. They won the pennant on Travis Ishikawas dramatic ninth-inning homer on Oct. 16 at AT&T Park in a game that saw them snap a streak of 242 consecutive plate appearances without a homer. Big moments came from all over the lineup, of course, but the Giants produced little in the way of big blows over the past week, winning Games 4 and 5 with 28 hits, including 24 singles. They scored 15 straight runs before Kansas Citys seven-run rally in the second inning of Game 6 on Tuesday, when the Giants were shut out over seven innings by rookie Yordano Ventura. They had eight more hits in Game 7 -- all but one of them a single. It was the eighth World Series title in franchise history. That was a phenomenal series, said Yost. They played great baseball. And Madison Bumgarner, man. What can you say about him? The Royals, perennial down-and-outers in the AL Central, snatched a wild-card spot to reach the playoffs for the first time since winning the World Series in 1985. Building a brand as an underdog favorite, they won their first eight playoff games against the Athletics, Angels and Orioles before running into Bumgarner in Game 1 last week. Their 10-0 win in Game 6 -- a party from nearly start to finish for the 40,000 fans in attendance -- was the most lopsided World Series shutout since Kansas Citys 11-0 win over St. Louis in Game 7 in 1985. It hurts to come as close as we came, said Yost. As magical as our run has been, to end up losing the ballgame by 90 feet is tough. That magic which produced extra-inning wins in the Royals first three playoff games -- and four of their first five -- wasnt reproduced against the Giants. Their three wins in the series came by 16 runs. That includes Fridays 3-2 victory in Game 3, when the Royals took a 2-1 lead in the series on the backs of bullpen stars Kelvin Herrera, Brandon Finnegan, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, who combined to throw four no-hit innings in the game. All three pitched on Wednesday after Guthrie (1-1) went 3 1/3 innings. The Royals got to 39-year-old Tim Hudson, scoring two runs in the second inning on Gordons double and Omar Infantes sacrifice fly. Hudson, the oldest pitcher ever to start Game 7, got just five outs and Jeremy Affeldt (1-0) threw 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win, running his streak to 22 consecutive appearances in the postseason without allowing a run, one shy of the record held by Yankees great Mariano Rivera. Bumgarner finished with 270 innings pitched in the regular and postseason and ran his career World Series record to 4-0. Game Notes Sandoval broke the old postseason hits record of 25 shared by Marquis Grissom (1995), Darin Erstad (2002) and David Freese (2011) ... Hudson, who is MLBs active wins leader with 214, also pitched Game 3 on Friday. He is without a postseason win since Game 2 of the 2001 ALDS, when he pitched Oakland past the Yankees ... Royals great and 1985 World Series MVP Bret Saberhagen threw out the first pitch ... Home teams are now 18-19 in World Series Game 7s. ' ' '

Metairie, LA - New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed Wednesday that the club has signed veteran kicker Shayne Graham as a replacement for Garrett Hartley. Many felt that the punishment to Prust wasnt harsh enough considering Stepan broke his jaw on the play, the hit was late, and the head was potentially targeted.Daniel Carcillo also received a suspension after Game 3. Although he wasnt overly physical, abuse is abuse so he received the automatic 10 game ban for abusing an official:Then, there was the Derek Brassard fiasco. The Rangers forward will be returning to the lineup tonight after leaving Game 1 of the series with an injury. Head coach of the Habs, Michel Therrien said that "we expect Derick Brassard to play and we know exactly where hes injured. Hockey is a small world."This caused quite the stir and head coach of the Rangers, Alain Vigneault, responded with this: #NYR Vigneault on #Habs Therrien saying he knows Brassard injury: "I hope nothing happens to Derrick or Michel could be in trouble." — John Lu (@JohnLuTSNMtl) May 25, 2014Hopefully nothing happens to Brassard, or this thing will get out of hand, but the shenanigans didnt stop there. Assistant coach of the New York Rangers, Ulf Samuellson, attended Habs practice yesterday morning, much to the displeasure of Therrien. And of course, the displeasure of Therrien created displeasure from Vigneault, who said this about Therriens actions: Vigneault calls what Therrien did at practice yesterday "uncalled for." Regarding Habs coach telling Rangers assistants to leave — Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) May 25, 2014He also added that the Habs were lucky that things didnt get out of hand while ejecting Samuelsson: Vigneault also said "lucky it didnt escalate," talking about Montreal demanding security remove Ulf Samuelson from Habs prax yesterday. — Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) May 25, 2014Of course, Therrien isnt the first guy to be angry at Ulf Samuelsson:So there you have it and now it is time for Game 4. The Habs would love to even up this series while the Rangers will try to stretch the series lead to 3-1. It will be interesting to see if Tokarski can put in another solid performance for the Habs. CHAUNCEY BILLUPS (Pistons): Yes they got Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings in the off-season and Andre Drummond is a beast (teams are kicking themselves for passing on him - he rebounds and block shots every game - thats two more discernable and significant skills than most guys in his draft class), but dont for a second discount the impact of having a savvy veteran like Billups on your team. Gordon (10 REC, 261 YDS, 2 TD, 15 targets) is emerging as a superstar, putting up huge numbers even with Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden at quarterback.Pride was etched onto Bob Hartleys face and evident in his voice. The coach of the Calgary Flames had spent the better part of 2 1-2 hours watching his team play spoiler to the New Jersey Devils playoff hopes, winning a 1-0 game at the Prudential Center on April 7.I love this group, Hartley said. Its just a hard-working group. Were going to fight until the last second.Calgarys work ethic was a key component last season. A significantly under-talented squad played hard and finished with a 35-40-7 record despite competing in the tough Pacific Division. Before the Flames open their 2014-15 campaign at home against Vancouver on Oct. 8, here are some things to consider:FROSH FLAMES: A little more than a year after embarking on an organizational-wide rebuilding project, it is too soon to state the Flames possess more talent their pipeline. But what they do possess makes for an intriguing foundation. Sean Monahan, the sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft, played 75 games for Calgary last season and finished with 34 points (22 goals and 12 assists). He could be joined this year by the offensively gifted Johnny Gaudreau, 2014 fourth overall pick Sam Bennett and Sven Baertschi, who recorded 11 points in 26 games last season with Calgary.CONTENTIOUS CALGARY: One of the hot topics in hockey is the role of fighting in the game. The Flames, who finished tied for 11th in the league with 32 bouts last season, believe it has a role, especially as it pertains to their youngg players taking care of themselves on the ice.dddddddddddd. Calgary brought in former AHL pugilist Serge Roberge into training camp to teach their prospects about fighting. Whats our job as a coaching staff, as an organization? Hartley rhetorically asked reporters when the subject was brought up. To try and protect our assets. It was about doing the right things in order to teach them to protect themselves.GUIDEPOSTS: By and large, NHL organizations are loathe to throw their prospects in too deep. Instead, teams us veterans to show them the ropes. To that end, Calgary added established NHLers Mason Raymond, Deryk Engelland and Jonas Hiller in free agency, and traded for Brandon Bollig.BLUELINE BREAKOUT: Consider the 2013-14 season Mark Giordanos coming out party. Calgarys top-pair defenceman set career highs in goals (14), points (47), average time on ice per game (25:14) and finished 10th in Norris Trophy voting. Now the challenge is to repeat the feat, as he will be counted to stabilize Calgarys back end.SET IN NET?: Karri Ramo acquitted himself well in 2013-14, compiling a 17-15-4 mark with a 2.65 goals-against average and .911 save percentage in 40 games. Yet he enters training camp challenging for the No. 1 job as the Flames signed Hiller to a two-year, $9 million deal in free agency. In 326 NHL games all with Western Conference rival Anaheim, Hiller had a 162-110-32 record with a .916 save percentage and 2.51 goals-against average. ' ' '
