Following the announcement of the Team Canada roster for Sochi 2014 on Tuesday, speculation has begun about which of the three goaltending candidates should become the starter, Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, or Mike Smith. The two names that are being bounced around most are British Columbia native Price and Montreal native Luongo. Both have had very successful seasons to date, with each players goals-against average sitting around the 2.20 mark. They have similar save percentages as well, with Price besting Luongo by a small margin at .928. So if you were head coach Mike Babcock, who would be your starting goalie? Luongo is a veteran in international competition, having competed in both the 2006 Turin games and winning gold in his home country at the Vancouver 2010 games. He averaged 1.76 goals against in the 2010 games when he was the teams starting goaltender. The Vancouver Canuck is currently at a disadvantage due to injury. Hes had a slow start to 2014 after suffering a groin injury in late December that caused him to miss three games, followed by suffering a lower-body injury shortly after his return. Luongo is expected to miss a week or two of action, making it a close call for him to return to form for a strong start in Sochi. Price is already a six-year NHL veteran but will be playing in his first Olympics. The Montreal Canadiens star keeper has been showing his best abilities for Team Canadas management this past month, going 7-3-2 since the start of December. Smith secured his spot on the roster by posting a goals against average of 2.89 and a .911 save percentage for the Coyotes this season. Sochi would not be the Kingston, Ontario natives first IIHF rodeo. The Phoenix Coyote represented Canada in the 2012 World Championship but similar to Price he is a first-time Olympian.
